Hello there! Welcome to my 69 Illovestrations Website!
This site represents the artwork examination I had to pass for my course of study. I chose The Magnetic Fields’ 69 Love Songs as a subject since I love Stephin Merritt’s songwriting a great deal. His are songs that mean a lot to me. I felt something like an urge inside to illustrate them, to get lost in their beauty.
So I spent the last 12 months in the cellar of our art department, which hides a printing studio where I settled in and was lost in thoughts about these songs and their illustrated distant cousins on Bütten paper. So what you see now are the grapes of inspiration drawn from the album and also which stories come to my mind while hearing the songs. I really had a lot of fun doing the graphics even though the work was often hard, the air bad and on the verge of intoxication and the light quite dim. You can really feel down if you spend nearly the whole day in a dark cellar... but read down as in beaten, beatific, monk-like relief. Well, I decided to illustrate the songs by making use of the method of etching and aquatint. The process of work is absorbing, so I mostly enjoyed it.
Anyway, I’ve finished working on them a while ago and I’d like to show them to other people, so here they are! Hope you enjoy them! I’d be glad if anyone would give me some feedback in the guestbook, so if you like? The full-scale representation is 5,9 x 7,9 inch and they are limited by an edition of 50 prints each. For any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me.
If you want more background information about this wonderful triple album, I’d recommend the ace 69 Love Songs infopage, that you‘ll find in the link section.
Okay, here’s hope you enjoy the website!
Cheers, Jana.
