The Author
Michael Böhme lives in Berlin, germany. He obtained his Biology Diploma (1988) from the Technical University of Dresden for work on primary production in the River Elbe. Then he worked at the Institute of Geography and Geoecology on ecological aspects of the River Spree as the main source of nutrients and phytoplankton for Lake Müggelsee.From 1992 to 1996 he joined several projects of the Institute for Freshwater Ecology and Fisheries and the Humboldt-University dealing with the analysis of macrophytes in lakes east of Berlin, the effect of old river branches for Sedimentation of (mainly) organic materials, (input and) utilization of nutrients and primary production in flowing waters of the River Spree catchment, and the use of spectral fluorescence to determine the biomass of main groups of phytoplankton. 1997 he was engaged in the systematic mapping and evaluation of morphological structures of Berlin streams.
1998 he started working for the German Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG) with a study concerning all possible influences of macrophytes on phytoplankton in flowing waters. 1999 he joined a project, which has the aim to evaluate the role of the interstitial and waterbodies partially separated off the main stream by groynes in the river Elbe, Germany. This river has about 6900 groynes along its banks.
He is member of the Societas Internationalis Limnologiae (SIL) and listens to the SIL working group on the conservation and management of running waters.
