The music is the instrumental theme of the famous Paramount film 'Love Story'. Francis Lai & His Orchestra reached 1971 position No. 31 in the US Billboard with the instrumental version of this song. In the same year Henry Mancini & His Orchestra reached position No. 13.
Francis Lai won an Oscar for the music. He already had another Oscar for his theme to "A Man And A Woman". He also was accompanist for Edith Piaf, for whom Lai also composed a number of songs as well.

Carl Sigman penned the words to the music and the title became "Where Do I Begin". Andy Williams reached a peak US Billboard position No. 9 in 1971 with this song.
Carl Sigman was a lyricist and wrote many famous songs. Many of his compositions have been recorded by Frank Sinatra from the 40's into the 90's. His first major composition was 1940's "Love Lies," recorded by Sinatra while with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. Other famous Sigman songs recorded by Shirley Bassey are for example "My Way Of Life", "Till" and "What Now My Love". For the last one he worked together with Gilbert Becaud and this song has then been recorded by many artists like for example for Frank Sinatra's 1995 "Duets" album.

Lyrics:

Where do I begin?
To tell the story of how great a love can be
The sweet love story that is older than the sea
The simple truth about the love he brings to me
Where do I start?

Like a summer rain
That cools the pavement with a patent leather shine
He came into my life and made the living fine
And gave a meaning to this empty world of mine
He fills my heart

He fills my heart with very special things
With angels' songs, with wild imaginings
He fills my soul with so much love
That anywhere I go, I'm never lonely
With him along, who could be lonely
I reach for his hand, it's always there

How long does it last?
Can love be measured by the hours in a day?
I have no answers now, but this much I can say
I'm going to need him till the stars all burn away
And he'll be there

He fills my heart with very special things
With angels' songs, with wild imaginings
He fills my soul with so much love
That anywhere I go, I'm never lonely
With him along, who could be lonely
I reach for his hand, it's always there

How long does it last?
Can love be measured by the hours in a day?
I have no answers now, but this much I can say
I'm going to need him till the stars all burn away
And he'll be there
