The Songs of Shirley Bassey

Don't Cry Out Loud
or sometimes also We Don't Cry Out Loud

Music written by Peter Allen, and words by Carol Bayer Sager.

Released on the 1982 album All By Myself and on a single. Shirley Bassey has performed this song live in some shows from 1982 on, till 1990.

The composer Peter Allen was born Peter Allen Woolnough. He's got recognition both as a composer of romantic ballads and, contrastingly, as a flamboyant stage performer. He was married to Liza Minnelli for a few years.
He had recorded this song first live 1977 on a double live LP "It Is Time for Peter Allen". 1978 Melissa Manchester reached position number 10 in the US Billboard with this song. Next year on Peter Allen's fourth studio album "I Could Have Been a Sailor" he then released his studio version of this song, and this album was a success for him, because it was his first album reaching the charts.

For background information about how Shirley Bassey came to this song read a letter of Rick Gianatos, and read what she herself said about this song on the concert video You Ain't Heard Nothing Yet.

Lyrics:

Baby cried the day the circus came to town
'cause she didn't want parades just passing by her
So she painted on a smile and took up with some clown
While she danced without a net upon the wire
I know a lot about her 'cause, you see
Baby is an awful lot like me

Don't cry out loud
Just keep it inside

And learn how to hide your feelings
Fly high and proud
And if you should fall
Remember you almost had it all

Baby saw that when they pulled the big top down
They left behind her dreams among the litter
The different kind of love she thought she'd found
There was nothing left but sawdust and some glitter
But baby can't be broken 'cause you see
She had the finest teacher - that was me

Don't cry out loud
Just keep it inside

And learn how to hide your feelings
Fly high and proud
And if you should fall
Remember you almost had it all

Don't cry out loud
Just keep it inside

And learn how to hide your feelings
Fly high and proud
And if you should fall
Remember you almost made it

Don't cry out loud
Just keep it inside

And learn how to hide your feelings
Fly high and proud
And if you should fall
Remember you almost had it all
