The Songs of Shirley Bassey

Thought I'd Ring You

Music composed by Pino Marchese and Guido Deloo. Lyrics by Charles McLoughlin and Pierre Delanoë.

Shirley Bassey has never recorded this song alone. She released these two duets:

Additionally 1984 a single has been released with both versions on it.

I prefer the version together with Alain Delon, because of his impressive voice. 1983 also a video clip of this song has been shown in TV.
Alain Delon is a very famous french actor who started with exceptional good looks and matured in a wellknown moviestar (at least in Europe). For more information about him visit Alain Delon. He had also done a duet with Dalida, the Mina song "Paroles, Paroles". Shirley Bassey has recorded that song in English together with Al Corley and it became "Remember". (For Dalida see Born To Sing)

Al Corley is an American actor who played Steven Carrington in the early episodes of "Dynasty".

On the single is written that the duet was "from an original idea by Eddy Luyckx" and he was also the producer. He must be a Belgian, because of his name and the fact that the copyright is in Brussels.
R. Loubet is mentioned for "Arrangements", but it is also written that the recording is arranged by Pino Marchese. So I'm not sure which role these two played. I only know that Marchese was also the arranger of the great 1984 recordings of "That's Right" and "Memory".
For some information about the co-writer of the lyrics Pierre Delanoë see What Now My Love?.

I heard that this song is a translation of the song "Pensando en Llamarte", but I'm not sure.

The recording together with Alain Delon is available re-released on some collection CD's. Sadly on most of the recordings they faded out after about 3:21 minutes, but the original recording was 4:17 - 4:20. Here only a few CD's containing this song:

And there are many more sampler CD's available with this track on it. Search for the title in CD-shops that support a title search (Tower Records for example).

Lyrics together with Alain Delon (in French) with translation:

Because of some corrections by Johnny to the French text after Samia had already translated it, I'm no longer sure that the translation is still always correct. If You are good in French, check the translation please. Thank You very much in advance.

Shirley Bassey:
Thought I'd ring you

And tell you I'm in town
Hope to see you
Yes, dinner would be fine
Do you remember
When you and I first met?
I know I do
Do You?

Alain Delon:
Oh non, je n'ai rien oublié

Oh no, I haven't forgot
Rien oublié de cette étrange fille
Anything of this strange life
Qui est venue traverser ma vie et ma ville
That came to cross my life and my town
Rien oublié non plus de cette drôle de nuit
Anything either of this odd night
Dans nous sommes sortis, je crois
After which we became, I think
Amis?
Friends?

Shirley Bassey:
Lost and confused

Whatever could I do
Nothing to lose
Oh, don't you see I trust in you?
Caught in the rain on such a sunny day
Caught in the rain on such a special day with you

Nice to see you
You've hardly changed, it's true
A little older

But time 's been kind to you
Do you remember a very special night
You know I do
Do you?

Alain Delon:
Oh oui, tu as bien fais d'appeler

Oh yes, you did right to call
Moi, moi je suis bouleversé
I, I am confused
Ça m'a complètement surpris, tu sais
It completely moved me, you know
De te voir à Paris, no je n'ai pas oublié encore
To see you in Paris, no I haven't forgot yet
Ni le bain de la fontaine, ni la robe collée sur ton corps
Either the bath in the fountain, or the dress clinging on your body
Ni les mots du poème, comment pourrai-je oublier?
Or the words of the poem, how could I forget?

Shirley Bassey:
Lost and confused

Whatever could I do
Nothing to lose
Oh, don't you see I trust in you?
Caught in the rain on such a sunny day
Caught in the rain on such a special day with you

Lost and confused

Whatever could I do
Nothing to lose
Oh, don't you see I trust in you?
Caught in the rain on such a sunny day
Caught in the rain on such a special day with you

Lyrics together with Al Corley (in English):

Shirley Bassey:
Thought I'd ring you

And tell you I'm in town
Hope to see you
Yes, dinner would be fine
Do you remember
When you and I first met?
I know I do
Do You?

Al Corley:
Hey baby
It's sure good to hear your voice again
Of course I haven't forgotten the day we first met
If you remember

We both had our eye on the same cab
And just as we got there
Mmhmm... it started to rain
I guess I'll never forget that look in your eye
Not that look

Shirley Bassey:
Lost and confused

Whatever could I do
Nothing to lose
Oh, don't you see I trust in you?
Caught in the rain on such a sunny day
Caught in the rain on such a special day with you

Nice to see you
You've hardly changed, it's true
A little older

But time 's been kind to you
Do you remember a very special night
You know I do
Do you?

Al Corley:
Do I?

Mmhmm, mmhmm
You know, that neither of us really cared where we were headin'
Aahh, not that night
And that cabbie dropped us off at that little french restaurant I knew
And what with the wine and the food
We just never noticed the time
I know I kept on wishing that night would never, ever end

Shirley Bassey:
Lost and confused

Whatever could I do
Nothing to lose
Oh, don't you see I trust in you?
Caught in the rain on such a sunny day
Caught in the rain on such a special day with you

Lost and confused

Whatever could I do
Nothing to lose
Oh, don't you see I trust in you?
Caught in the rain on such a sunny day
Caught in the rain on such a special day with you
