Interview mit Debra Fogarty im Januar 2002

Sehr beeindruckt bin ich vom Debütalbum „Passion`s price“ der U.S. Gotik Band DIVA DESTRUCTION um Sängerin Debra Fogarty, die in erster Linie die Fäden der Band zieht. Ein wenig erinnert mich die Musik von DIVA DESTRUCTION an die Berliner Untoten, das liegt wohl mit am schaurig schönen Gesang von Debra. Die Texte sind bittersüß und handeln von Seelenqualen, Betrug und der dunklen Seite des Lebens. Die Musik ist extrem eingängig und hat man sie sich einmal angehört, kommt man nicht mehr von ihr weg. Die Musik ist einfach eine geniale Symbiose aus electronischen Beats und rhythmischen Gotik Gitarren, und es macht einfach Spaß, sich das Album wieder und wieder anzuhören. „Passion`s price“ ist ein Album voller Ohrwürmer und Hits, und wird wohl in nächster Zeit die Clubs stürmen. Um so erfreut war ich, als ich die Chance bekam mich mit Debra über ihre Band DIVA DESTRUCTION zu unterhalten.

Könnt ihr mir zum Anfang etwas über euch und eure künstlerische Entwicklung erzählen?

Als ich 8 Jahre alt war, lernte ich klassisches Piano. Danach wechselte ich zu den Keyboards um einen neuen Sound und auch Melodien zu erschaffen. Ich spielte viel Beethoven als ich aufwuchs, daher beeinflusst es immer noch meine Art zu schreiben. Ich liebe schnelle doppelte Oktavenakkorde.

Warum wähltest du den Namen Diva Destruction und was willst du damit ausdrücken?

Ich schuf den Namen in der Bedeutung einer Frau, die zerstört wurde, aber die soviel mehr hätte sein können.

Wann und wie begannen Diva Destruction? Ich begann 1997 Musik zu schreiben, dann gründete ich die Band Anfang 1998 als ich schon viel Musik geschrieben hatte.

Wieso wurde DarkWave/ Gotik zum Stil von Diva Destruction?

Gibt es irgendwelche Vorbilder? Ich liebe viele Gothic und Industrial Bands, wie Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie, Christian Death und Das Ich. Ich wurde auch sehr beeinflusst durch einige ausdrucksstarke Sängerinnen, wie Sinead O’Connor, Berlin, Eurythmics und Curve.

Wie waren die Reaktionen zu der CD 'Passion Price'?

Phantastisch und überschwänglich. Es scheint alles so schnell passiert zu sein, daher ist es so aufregend. Ich denke das Internet hat uns sehr geholfen Menschen und DJs in der ganzen Welt sehr schnell zu erreichen. Ich bin so glücklich, dass die Menschen auch den Lyriks Aufmerksamkeit schenken.

Wie bekamt ihr den Plattenvertrag mit Alice in.../Dark Dimensions?

Thomas Thyssen empfahl uns das Label. Wir versuchten zu dieser Zeit eine Entscheidung zu treffen aus fünf Angeboten, die wir von Labels in den U.S.A. und Europa hatten. Wir sind sehr dankbar, dass Thomas sie uns empfohlen hat, da wir sehr glücklich mit ihnen sind.

Wie lange dauerten die Aufnahmen zu 'Passion Price' und magst du die Arbeit im Studio?

Es dauerte mehr als ein Jahr Passion’s Price aufzunehmen. Wir nahmen die meisten Songs in einem Studio in L.A. und einige wenige in einem Studio in Seattle auf. Ich hatte viel Spaß daran in einem Studio zu ersten Mal zu arbeiten, aber es war ein sehr komplexer Prozess aufgrund des Umfangs an elektronischen Tracks, die ich geschaffen hatte. Wir hatten einige Midisequenzer Komplikationen mit meinem Kurzweil 2500XS Keyboard und die Gesangsaufnahmen brauchten auch einige Zeit.

Wie entsteht ein neuer Song? Gibt es bestimmte Stimmungen, in dem du besonders kreativ bist?

Schmerz. Ich weiss nicht, ob ein Künstler zu sein nicht manchmal ein Segen oder ein Fluch ist. Ich habe meine beste Musik und meine besten Lyriks, wenn ich meinen tiefsten Schmerz herauslasse. Ich schreibe oft neue Songs in der Nacht, wenn ich mich über eine Beziehung aufrege.

Woher kommen die Ideen für die Lyriks? Über welche Aspekte sprichst du? Wie wichtig sind die Lyriks für dich?

Meine Lyriks sind sehr persönlich, da sie von meinen Beziehungen handeln. Daher sind die Songtexte mir sehr wichtig. Sie handeln von Verrat, Masochismus und Grausamkeit in den Beziehungen wie in meinen Songs "Bed of Lies" und "Enslaved". "You’re the Psycho" handelt von Heuchelei, wenn Menschen weit schlechter sind als die die sie anklagen.

Wie wichtig ist die künstlerische Arbeit für dich? Was bedeutet sie dir?

Das Schreiben ist sehr wichtig für mich und zwar dann wenn es mich erfüllt. Es rettet mich auch manchmal wenn mein Schmerz keinen anderen Auslass hat. Ich finde es sehr belohnenswert wenn Fans nach der Show zu mir kommen um mir zu sagen, wie sehr sie eine Beziehung zu meinem Songtexten aufbauen, wie in "Bed of Lies".

Wie hat man sich einen Auftritt von Diva Destruction vorzustellen? Hattet ihr schon oft die Möglichkeit live aufzutreten? Wie setzt ihr die Musik bei einem Auftritt auf der Bühne um?

Wir versuchen sehr theatralische Liveshows zu machen. Wir haben schon Schneemaschinen benutzt und bauten Schreine mit Weihrauch und Kerzen auf der Bühne auf. Wir haben zerrissenes rotes Material auf der Bühne, dass wir in die Fans werfen zusammen mit meinem abgerissenen Diva Kleid. Ich benutze auch sehr lange Streifen des zerrissenen Materials in meinen Haaren, dass viele Meter hoch über meinen Kopf geblasen wird und mich aussehen lässt wie eine Medusa oder ein Geist. Wir machten eine U.S.A. und eine Europa Tour letzten Sommer und wir behielten das meiste der Bühnenshow aber wir konnten auf die Tour nicht die Schneemaschine und den Schrein mitnehmen. Wir haben nun auch einen Live-Schlagzeuger bei unseren Bühnenauftritten - dadurch wird die Musik viel aggressiver bei unseren Liveshows.

Letztes Jahr wolltet ihr bei den "Herbstnächten III" auf Schloss Rabenstein in der Nähe von Raben auftreten. Warum seid ihr nicht gekommen?

Wir wollten dort aufzutreten, jedoch aufgrund der tragischen Ereignisse vom 11. September entschieden wir uns als Band dazu nicht dorthin zu fliegen. Wir freuen uns jedoch sehr darauf auf diesem Event noch aufzutreten. Wir werden nun beim Wave Gotik Treffen in Leipzig diesen Sommer auftreten und werden voraussichtlich eine Tour durch Deutschland machen.

Was machst du neben der Musik?

Ich bin nebenbei auch Eigentumsmaklerin in Atlanta, aber das Schreiben des zweiten Albums beansprucht jetzt meine ganze Zeit. Zum Spaß mag ich es, in Clubs tanzen zu gehen und Konzerte zu besuchen hier in Los Angeles wo man viele gute Shows sehen kann. Ich sehe auch gerne Independentfilme und Kostümdramen.

Handelt es sich bei Diva Destruction um deine einzige Band?

Heute ja, aber früher spielte ich auch live Keyboards für Fear Cult als ich nach L.A. zog.

Gibt es konkrete Pläne für die Zukunft (neue Veröffentlichungen, Samplerbeiträge, Tour)?

Wir arbeiten aktuell an unserem zweiten Album. Wir haben zuletzt die Coverversion eines Radiohead Songs für eine Tribut-CD von Cleopatra Records veröffentlicht. Wir wählten den Song "Climbing Up the Walls". Wir haben auch einen Song für den bald startenden Film Gypsy 83 geschrieben. Wir machten eine große U.S.A. und Europa Tournee letzten Sommer und wir hoffen eine ähnliche Tour nächsten Sommer wieder zu machen. Wir hatten während der Tour eine Menge Spaß in England, Spanien und Deutschland und wir freuen uns darauf wiederzukommen.

Was kannst du uns über die U.S Dark Wave / Gotik Szene sagen? Wir sieht die Szene aus? Ist sie groß?

Die Szene in den U.S.A. ist groß in L.A., San Francisco, Chicago, und New York. Außerdem haben noch ein paar kleinere Städte wie Albuquerque eine überraschend starke Szene. Wir hatten eine Menge Spaß als wir dort während unserer US Tour letzten Sommer spielten. Die Szene ist eine Mischung aus Gothic, Death Rock, Industrial und Fetischszene und einige Städte haben separate Clubs für jede Art von Musik.

As a begin could you please tell me a little bit about you and your artistically development? I was trained as a classical pianist since the age of 8. Then I eventually made the switch to keyboards to create new sounds as well as melodies. I played a lot of Beethoven while I was growing up, so it still influences a lot of my writing style. I love to use fast double octave chords.

Why did you choose the name Diva Destruction and what do you try to express by this? I created the name to mean a woman who was destroyed, but who could have been so much more.

When and how did Diva Destruction start out? I started out writing music by myself in 1997, then I formed the band in early 1998 once I had written a lot of music.

Why did DarkWave / Gotik become the style of DivaDestruction? Are there any examples? I love many gothic and industrial bands, such as Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie, Christian Death, and Das Ich. I am also influenced by many powerful females singers, such as Sinead O’Connor, Berlin, Eurythmics, and Curve.

How was the feedback on the CD 'Passion Price'? Fantastic and overwhelming. It seems to have happened very fast, so it is exciting. I think the internet has really helped us reach people and DJs around the world at a very fast rate. I am also glad that people seem to be paying attention to the lyrics.

How did you get the record deal with Alice in.../Dark Dimensions? Thomas Thyssen recommended the label to us. We were trying to make a decision at that time among the five offers that we had from labels in both the U.S. and Europe. We are very grateful that Thomas recommended them to us since we are very happy with them.

How did it take recording 'Passion Price' and how did you like work in a studio? It took almost a year to record Passion’s Price. We recorded most of the songs in a studio in L.A. and a few songs in a studio in Seattle. I really enjoyed working in full studios for the first time, but it was a very complex process because of the amount of electronics tracks that I had created. We had some midi sequencing complications with my Kurzweil 2500XS keyboard, and the vocals layers took a while as well.

How does a new track come to life? What are the most important points? Pain. I don’t know if being an artist is a blessing or a curse sometimes. I have written my best music and my best lyrics out of venting my deepest pain. I often write new songs in the middle of the night when I’m upset about a relationship.

Where do the ideas for the lyrics come from? Which aspects are you talking about? How important are the lyrics for you? My lyrics are very personal since they are about my relationships. Thus, the lyrics are very important to me. They are about betrayal, masochism, and cruelty in relationships, such as in my songs, “Bed of Lies” and “Enslaved”. “You’re the Psycho” is about hypocrisy when people are far worse than those they accuse.

How important is your artistically work for yourself? What does it mean to you? My writing is extremely important to me since if is very fulfilling. It also saves me sometimes when my pain has no other outlet. I find it very rewarding when fans come up to me after shows to tell me how much they relate to my lyrics, such as in “Bed of Lies”.

How does a Diva Destruction live gig look like? Have you already often had the chance of performing live? How do you transform the music into performing on stage? We try to do very theatrical live shows. We have used snow machines and built shrines with incense and candles onstage. We have torn red material on the stage that blows in the fans along with my tattered diva gown. I also use very long strips of torn material in my hair that blow many feet above my head and make me look like medusa or a spirit. We did a U.S. and European tour last summer and we kept most of the stage show, but we couldn’t bring the snow machine and shrine on the tour. We also now have a live drummer with us on stage so the music is a lot more aggressive for our live shows.

This year you'll perform on the Autumnights III of Castel Rabenstein near Raben. What are your expectations and hopes for that gig? We were supposed to perform there, however due to the recent tragic events on Sept. 11 we voted as a band not to fly for it. We were really looking forward to performing at the event though. We will now perform at the Wave festival in Leipzig next summer and hopefully do a tour through Germany in the fall, so we are very excited about that.

What are you doing apart from music? I sometimes manage property in Atlanta, but now writing the second album occupies my full time. For fun, I like going to dance clubs and concerts here in Los Angeles, where there are lots of good shows to see. I also love watching indie films and costume dramas.

Is Diva Destruction your only musical band? Now it is, but I used to also play live keyboards for Fear Cult when I first moved to L.A.

Are there any concrete plans for future (new releases, Sampler contributions, Tour, ...) We are currently writing songs for our second CD. We also recently released a cover of a Radiohead song for a tribute CD by Cleopatra Records. We chose the song “Climbing Up the Walls”. We will also have a song in the upcoming movie Gypsy 83. We did a large U.S. and European tour this past summer and we hope to do a similar tour next summer as well. We had a lot of fun performing in England, Spain, and Germany during the tour and we look forward to going back.

What can you tell us about the U.S Dark Wave / Gotik scene? How does the scene look like? How big is it? The U.S. scene is large in L.A., San Francisco, Chicago, and New York. However, a few smaller cities, such as Albuquerque, NM, also have surprising strong scenes. We had a lot of fun when we played there during our U.S. and European tour this past summer. The scenes are a mixture of goth, death rock, industrial, and fetish scenes, and some cities have separate clubs for each type of music.
