Calling upon the good spirits of cooling...No, I am not talking about chilled alcoholic beverages here. It is rather about a waste avoidance scheme. Because, don't we all have the problems of having innumerable outdated CPUs, heat sinks etc. lying around in our houses? Not to mention all the circular shaped tin pieces left over from our last case modding exercise. Can they be put to good use? Read on. |
What I had left over on this occasion was the metal piece obstructing the fan outlet of a power supply. Initially I had reduced the fan speed in order to reduce the noise (I am talking about an older computer used for simple tasks here). However, during the recent heat wave I found out this wasn't such a brilliant idea: after opening the case I found CPU, harddisk and everything else inside rather hot. So I went back to normal fan speed, and I decided to remove the obstruction for better air flow and less noise.
And the mod is working very well. But what to do with the part I cut out? The solution is this:
Thank goodness I left the shirt on when I took the photo! Anyway, I hope this is the starting point to a new fashion, similar to the peace symbols worn in the 60s and 70s... a mass movement seeking to calm the spirits of heat and CPU failure. Also we overclockers can now recognise each other immediately in a crowd of people.
