Dragons
It is believed that the dragons were made my Sauron himself, but since he did not have the power (as in Aulë's case with the dwarves) to give life, nothing is really known of their origin. The first dragon to be seen was Glaurung, the Father of Dragons, when he issued from Angband in the middle of the First Age and was nearly defeated since he was not full grown then.
Dragons have the ability to speak and cast dragon spells placing the victim in a state of confusion (as Glaurung did with Nienor in the Silmarillion). Dragons can be catagorized into two different sections, dragons who can fly (or not) and dragons who can breathe fire (fire-drakes) or not (cold-drakes).
The two best known dragons Glaurung and Smaug belonged both to the fire-drakes but only Smaug could fly.
