Ents
At the prayer of the valar Yavanna, spouse of Aulë, Ilúvatar created the ents to protect the forests of Middle-Earth. The ents are giant, tree-like creatures that can walk at great paces and live only of water ("enriched" water that is). They act as Shepherds of the Trees in the woods of Middle-Earth with Fangorn, one of the oldest ents, as one of the best known members of this race.
Ents live to a great age as far as can be read in The Lord of the Rings, but nothing is known if they are mortal indeed and what a "normal" age for an ent is. Fangorn, along with Skinbark, seems to be a couple of thousand years old, originated shortly after the Elves.
They dwelt mainly in the forest of Fangorn on the eastern slopes of the Misty Mountains and greatly aided the Fellowship in the War of the Ring.
The newborn and younger of the ents are called 'entings', but due to the loss of the entwives, the female ents it seems, there have been no entings for many centuries. The entwives dwelt in the region that was known later as the Brown lands, but when Sauron devastated this region the entwives fled into the wild of Middle-Earth.
