Maiar
The Maiar are, like the Valar, spirits from outside the world but of lesser degree. The Maiar aided the work of the Valar and did themselves work of renown.
The best known Maiar spirits are Gandalf (belonging to the people of Manwë and Varda), Saruman and Sauron (belonging to the people of Aulë.
Taking physical shape like these Maiar they were able to walk among other creatures unknown of their true origin but could be slain. Due to their noble spirits they
do not die as can be seen at the end of The Lord of the Rings when Wormtongue cuts Saruman's throat.
