Men
The Secondborn
Men awoke at the first rising of the sun (beginning of the First Age) in the land of Hildórien in the far east. Seeing the sun rise many men set out westwards finally reaching Beleriand after some three hundred years of wandering. The Elves called Men the Atani in their tongue and sometimes even The Usurpers since they thought that, even though their were born abouth 9000 years after the Elves, they were destined to dominate Middle-Earth.
The three houses of men, who came first over the Blue Mountains into Beleriand, were called the Edain by the Elves since they faithfully aided the Elves in the wars of Beleriand. These three houses are:
- · The House of Bëor
- · The House of Haleth
- · The House of Hador
These three houses were afterwards rewarded by the Valar with the island of Numenór for fighting against Morgoth (Melkor).
Men were given by Illúvatar the "Gift of Men", making them subject to death by age and sickness and leaving the confines of the world when they die. It is said that after the world is remade Men will join with the Elves in the Second Music of the Ainur.
During the ages the races of Elves and Men sometimes becamen mingled; their children becoming known as the Half-Elves. At the final destruction of Morgoth the Half-Elven were given to choice with which kindred their were to be accounted. The most famous of these were Eärendil (son of Tuor [mortal] and Idril [immortal]) and his sons Elrond and Elros, who's mother was Elwing, the daugther of Dior and thus directly descending from Lúthien.
From Elros descended the long line of the Númenorean kings and after the Downfall of Númenor the kingdom's of Gondor and Arnor, founded by Elendil and his son's Anarion and Isildur.
