Orcs
The orcs are a warlike race used by Morgoth and Sauron (and even Saruman) as the main soldiers in the wars of Beleriand and Middle-Earth.
Not much is known of the origin of the orcs, but is believed that they are corrupted Elves captured by Melkor at the time of the Awakening of the Elves.
Orcs generally fear the sunlight, living thus in caves to tunnels and moving only at night. The orcs bred by Saruman (the Uruk-hai) could in fact endure the sunlight since they had Dunlanding blodd in them.
The orcs, especially the smaller kind, of the north a generally refered to as goblins, having their capital at Mount Gundabad at the meeting point of the Misty and the Grey Mountains. It was a smaller city of the northern orcs that the the Bilbo and the rest of the party found in the Misty Mountains.
