In terms of extras, The Lord of the Rings has been the biggest production outside of Hollywood. There were around 300 members of the principal cast and over 15,000 extras were used, including members of the New Zealand army. Other extras were, for the most part, New Zealanders. Areas like Wellington and Auckland saw incredible swells of tourism during filming of the trilogy.
