Nepenthes carunculata (N. bongso)

N. carunculata is a very nice terrarium plant. It grows quite fast for a highland plant, producing a new leaf and pitcher about every six weeks. After four years of growth mine reached a diameter of 25cm and after about 40 to 50 leafes is now starting to climb. Sadly the internodal distance increases to more than 12cm when climbing and so it will be a short amount of time until I have to cut the climbing stem back. The smaller pitcher at the front of the left photo is a lower one of the first basal offshot and the bigger one behind is an intermediate pitcher, still showing most of the features of the lower pitchers. The right photo shows the leaf apex of this clone.

Lower pitchers are coloured quite nicely and turn to a deep purple under good light levels. They stay quite small reaching a size of about 12cm in height only.

Only one intermediate pitcher was produced by this plant when starting to climb. Upper pitchers are green in coulour and not as spectacular as the lower ones.

N. carunculata was united with N. bongso by M. Cheek & M. Jebb in "Flora Malesiana" Vol. 15 - 2001, but I will stick with the name I got it under as there are some taxonomists which still see significant differences between N. bongso and N. carunculata.
