Nepenthes clipeata

N. clipeata is an intermediate plant which also tolerates highland conditions. The plant is about three years old and since two years it produces adult leafes with the unique peltate insertion of the tendril in the middle of the leaf. The left picture below was taken two weeks after the above one and shows a full developed lower pitcher hidden below its leaf. The pitcher at the right picture is on of the first upper ones the plant produced. This upper pitcher is lacking the small wings which lower ones have. And yes, the pictures are sharp but the plant isn't. Apart from the upper side of the leafes and the peristom tho whole plant is covered with short brown hairs.

This plant originates from a female plant grown in Munich botanical garden some years ago and is for sure the real N. clipeata. Sadly some plants around grown from the same source are in fact hybrids, which may look very similar to N. clipeata but haven't those extreme peltate insertions of the tendrils. My plant originates from Thomas Carow and to my knowledge is one of the three pure clones Andreas Wistuba has in TC.

Update 22.05.2003:

The plant is still slow growing and has started two basal offshots :-) N. clipeata still grows consistently slow under my conditions producing a new leaf and pitcher about every two months. In winter the plant is kept under highland conditions with night time temperaturess as low as 10 deg. In summer the conditions are more intermediate with night time temperatures of about 16 deg C. The plant grows at a steady rate without big differences in summer and in winter.
