Some of my ramblings on the incredible Eocene primate from Messel, Darwinius. It may not be directly relevant to Mesozoic cynodonts, but it's fascinating.

What the hell is a Eucynodont?
Should you have accidentally stumbled across this page, please feel free to browse. Eucynodonts are mammals and proto-mammals, (and proto-proto-mammals). It's all about our distant ancestors, back in the days of the dinosaurs and before.

I find it difficult to read long entries from a computer screen. There's so much text. Any suggestions?
Copy and paste the relevant text into a word processing programme, and print it out in any size and with any spacing you like. Then you could read it in the bath, should you feel so inclined, in bed or on the beach. If you think I attempt to proof-read this stuff from a computer screen, you'd be wrong.

What's on this page?
To start with, there's a list of directories and subdirectories. These contain entries of relevance to the particular groups. For example, the Docodonta directory contains docodonts, (genera and species). Then come notes on additions, alterations and perhaps adulterations. Finally, there's an A-Z of Mesoeucynodonts; Abelodon to Zygiocuspis. This provides links to the individual generic entries. Should a cladogramme be of interest, there isn't one. Should you wish to know how many genera are featured, you could count them.

Plans for 2010
None, as such. The ever growing backlog of newly arrived papers has ever growingly grown and blown any plan out of my mind's window. Welcome free access to the entire fifty plus years' worth of content in Acta Palaeontologica Polonica is partly to blame. The wealth of goodies awaiting attention gets overwhelming if looked at too closely, so I try to avoid doing that and carry on ploddingly instead.
However, that doesn't mean more papers wouldn't be welcomed. If I ain't got it, I want it! A backlog is no problem compared to a drought.

Book Reviews
I don't do reviews but, should anybody want to send me a copy of a relevant book, then I might attempt one. That's an advert rather than being the main topic I'm now going to address.
Some comments on a book and a quarry -Mesozoic eucynodont moans
I'm not in a position to attempt a review of Benton et al (2005), Mesozoic and Tertiary mammals and birds of Great Britain, Geological Conservation Review Volume No. 32. However, I can link to the relevant webpage: http://www.jncc.gov.uk/page-2980. I've got but the first two chapters. The first was uploaded onto the internet by the publishers, and that deserves thanks. Chapter two came from contacts with copies and photocopiers. While such reproductions are undoubtedly illegal and do little justice to some illustrations, people may like to calculate the cost of 215 photocopies for themselves, and compare the result with the price of the book, 55 pounds. I wonder which would prove the cheaper option.
55 quid are 55 good reasons not to buy a book. Whether they're a sufficient discouragement depends upon the worth of the content, the financial means of potential readers, and how they feel about value for money. The end result of such equations can be influenced by: lowering the price, enhancing the content, or both.
The title of the second chapter is British Mesozoic fossil mammal GCR sites. The chapter undoubtedly meets that challenge, but in a stingy rather than a generous way. It provides quite good coverage of officially selected localities, mentions all the others I was aware of, and at least one at Swindon I'd not heard of previously. However, 'mentions' is more or less the extent of things. For example:
Sunnydown, Dorset
A quarry at Sunnydown Farm has given rise to an extensive literature. I've got five papers on Sunnydown Cretaceous mammals. In global terms for this part of the Lower Cretaceous, it's most definitely one of the three richest mammal localities in the world. Readers are informed the place exists but not of much more. This is presumably solely because it doesn't happen to be a GCR locality. Neither am I, but I'm nevertheless important. What's the point of omitting it due to this self-imposed restriction? The book title claims to be about fossil mammals and birds of Britain and, in terms of Mesozoic football, Sunnydown competes strongly with other teams at the very top international level. It's of global significance but, perhaps as it's not all that far from Durlston Bay or is a working quarry, the coverage is about as much as that given to non-league soccer teams in the national press. This is a great pity. A comparison between that fauna and the near by Durlston one would certainly have been of interest.
The price is 55 quid. A more flexible editorial policy would've added useful content, and more paper wouldn't have sent the production costs soaring.
Hornsleasow, Gloucestershire
This Middle Jurassic locality's mentioned, but little more. This is a bit more understandable than for Sunnydown, as the eucynodonts haven't yet been described. Other faunal elements have been, but my relatives are unfortunately still awaiting study. Nevertheless, there are mammals there. The coverage provided on my amateur webpage is much more extensive than that in the book. I'll now add extra value for nothing by providing a link: Hornsleasow Quarry, Gloucestershire.
Adding extra value doesn't need to be overly difficult. Again, just because Hornsleasow hasn't been given the appropriate GCR sticky label of merit, that doesn't mean it can't be given decent coverage in a GCR publication. Despite what the editors may have thought (and in contrast to photocopying books for further distribution), such flexibility is legal.
By being more inclusive of sites, the book would've been more useful and better. And the publisher could've celebrated this worthwhile achievement by cutting the price.

Upper Chicksgrove Quarry, Wiltshire -to whom it may concern
Progress -update from 23rd June, 2008
John Needham of Tisbury, Wiltshire, has kindly forwarded news of some recent Chicksgrove developments (pers. comm.). These are entirely independent of the fossil collection referred to below. John informs me he found a small lens of the Chicksgrove plant and reptile bed in 2002, and promptly set about sampling it. Fossils included good plant silifications and a few reptile remains, with the plant specimens then finding their way to the Natural History Museum in London. The plant material showed most similarities with the floras of the Brushy Basin Member of the US Morrison Formation and the somewhat later 'Fossil Forest' of England's Purbeckia. (Purbeckia is my own slang, by the way. Others might prefer the 'Pubeck Limestone Group', but their tastes are doubtlessly inferior.) Reptile remains include a couple of theropod teeth, a tooth from a pterosaur and some croc choppers, mostly small. These aren't presently in a museum collection.
This work resulted in a description of plants: Needham, J. E. 2007 A preliminary interpretation of Upper Jurassic silicified plant fossils from the Portland Stone Formation of Chicksgrove Quarry, Wiltshire Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Magazine Vol. 100, 1-20 (available for £5 + £4 pp, e-mail wanhs@wiltshireheritage.org.uk).
Surprisingly or otherwise, this didn't require a quarter of a century to achieve! Should anybody detect some sarcasm in that sentence, there's nothing wrong with your understanding as the following should make clear.

Back to the book
In this case, I've got no moans about the book at all. This quarry has yielded Upper Jurassic mammals and, from the particular slice of time in question, it's definitely the most significant source on the planet. Never mind that none have yet been described. This Tithonian fauna's a world leader as there isn't another known competitor anywhere on Earth. This place matters, and it does so for the friends of dinos, crocs and other critters as well. A window into an unsampled slice of time is a big deal.
As far as the mammals go: "No precise specific assignments have yet been attempted" (p.55); "They have not been studied yet, so their full import still has to be determined" (p.56). In fact, with regards to the entire fauna (p.55): "Sorting of the washings and acid residues is still not finished."
So this location's been recently discovered?
No, dear reader. The fossils have been sitting around for a couple of decades. All three of those quoted sentences raise the same question: Why not? I've been most reliably informed that the same scant details provided on the fauna could've been written over twenty years ago. This is a heck of a long time and, as this collection represents an otherwise unsampled stage for terrestrial vertebrates, I can't believe that tempting a suitable specialist would've required going the whole way before the first date. This prospect must be a usable definition of the word 'temptation'. Finding a specialist can't have been that difficult.
Volunteer help?
The photo on page 55 shows about 15 oddly derived primates involved in collecting material from Chicksgrove, and I also happen to know unpaid effort was put in by dozens of volunteers in the early 1980s. Their help was sought and they responded from Salisbury, Southampton, Oxford and doubtlessly further afield. It would be kind of nice if that assistance could be appropriately respected and rewarded, with proper identifications and descriptions of at least some collected fossils, and before all of those volunteers have had time to drop dead and fossilize for themselves. If that can't be managed, then I'm not sure why anybody should've bothered donating their time to help out.

This site is constantly under construction. Each directory is concluded with a bibliography of non-web sources. Typographic misteaks are being correctid amnd kreated on a daily basist. One of the most inspired was mentioning the presence of metal foremen on a lower jaw. I don't know what they were doing there, as it was supposed to be a reference to a mental foramen.

Although this is a hobby project, it's obviously a serious hobby. It wasn't intended to be recommended as further reading for university students, but it has been. It's cited in Box 10.3, Relationships of the Mesozoic Mammals, p.301 of:

As I happen to enjoy the writing of Mike Benton, I can't help feeling slightly proud.

Please note: not all the genera listed are Mesozoic. If a particular group persists beyond the Cretaceous, I'm inclined to include the later members too. There are also a few early genera which are cynodonts rather than eucynodonts.
