Reed looked up, trying not to
be tempted by the man crouching in the access shaft above him. “You never
bothered to ask.”
Trip blinked in surprise at the
quietly uttered remark. “Maybe I should have. Mal, listen, I …”
“There is nothing to talk about,
commander.”
Trip inhaled deeply. “When you
kissed me, Malcolm, and I simply melted into your caress is nothing? The
fact that I saw stars exploding in front of my eyes when you touched me
is nothing? Or the fact that I can’t sleep without dreaming of you, that
I can’t walk these corridors without seeing you in my mind is nothing?
That I have seen what nobody else saw, and that I long to see that again
is nothing? Then I’m one hell of a fool because I was ready to die for
nothing.”
With that he got up and left.

Archer frowned. “Let me get this
straight,” he said slowly, “you came to blows with Malcolm Reed over a
feeling of jealousy because one of the Efil had approached him?”
“Yeah, well, looked like it to
me, Jon. The guy was pawin’ him!”
“And Malcolm was doing what?”
Trip felt himself redden with
embarrassment. “I think he was tellin’ him no. But at the time I just saw
red and charged in,” he added miserably. “Told him I’d be takin’ care of
the weapons system testin’ and realignment. I ordered him back to Enterprise.
Told him in no uncertain terms I didn’t want to see his ass anywhere close
to the Navaar.”
He shrunk into his chair as Jonathan
shot him a look of disbelief.

Malcolm inhaled deeply. "We're
talking about my parents here, Trip! The parents who never approved of
my choice of career. The parents who didn't know I had become the armory
officer aboard Enterprise until the captain called them. The parents I
haven't been in contact with since."
Realization dawned on the engineer's
features.
"The parents who don't know about
you," Malcolm added the last blow.
"Ouch," Tucker said slowly.

And then that face lost all remaining
color and the smaller man collapsed. Trip was just fast enough to catch
him before the limp body bounced off the floor plating. He wrapped his
arms around the slender form and felt something sticky and warm cling to
his fingers where they touched one side.
With horror, he pulled back one
hand and raised it into the artificial lighting of the hangar bay.
It glistened wetly. And red.
Trip met Archer’s eyes, saw his
shock mirrored in them, then he started to yell for the medical team.

"Wrong with me?" Malcolm suddenly
snapped, gray eyes lighting up with an anger Trip hadn't seen there just
a second ago. "The question should be, what is wrong with you?"
Trip stared at him. "Me?" he
echoed. "Well, compared to you, I'm perfectly fine!"
"Oh really? Is that why you've
been haunting me the last few days? Never leaving me alone? Always demanding
we go somewhere together?"
Tucker still stared at him, but
now the anger was rising. "Malcolm, what is botherin' you?"
The armory officer's lips became
thin, white lines. "Nothing."
"Nothin'? You call avoiding me,
not lettin' me kiss you.... touch you.... nothin'?"
"I didn't know our relationship
was built on physical contact alone!" he growled, quite aware of the low
blow.

"You want to see him die?" the
alien growled.
"No more than you want to die,"
was the calm reply. "I'd advise you let him go."
A bark of laughter. "You are
funny, stranger. I have the upper hand!"
"I doubt it."
Malcolm's eyes met the wide blue
ones of Tucker. Trip was pale but composed. There was a faint bruise on
his cheek, but the skin wasn't broken. Silently reassuring his lover, Reed
let his attention come back to the enemy.

Malcolm was about to follow Archer
when it happened. He dropped to his knees screaming, slamming his hands
over his ears, desperate to shut out the infernal high pitched noise, while
at the same time trying to keep the contents of his roiling stomach. He
didn't succeed - either way. Reed ended curled up on the ice, senses overloaded
by a blast of sound that left him nauseous, blind and deaf and whimpering,
pleading with all he was worth for someone, anyone, to just make it stop,
end the agonizing skull-splitting resonance.
There was nothing but this world
of shrill, eardrum-shattering, agonizing sound. A migraine of noise and
burning pain that left all his other senses dead, that wiped out his world
to exist only in this pain.

Malcolm didn’t know what woke
him from one second to another. He had slept too lightly to actually hit
an REM phase, something he usually only did when he was on high alert --
when the security officer in him had the paranoia and alarm mode cranked
to the max. But why here? This was their vacation.
They had gone to bed, lying with
each other, snuggling close and exchanging little gestures of affection,
then had drifted off. Well, Trip had drifted off and Malcolm had had the
strange tingly feeling of… what? It had taken a while for him to fall asleep
and now he was awake again.
It was a strange feeling of premonition,
as if something was about to happen. Something bad.

“Commander, I’m asking you again
to leave my sickbay.”
“The hell I will!” Trip exploded.
“The man in there is my partner! I’ve the right to be here, damnit!”
“Your presence is worsening his
condition,” Phlox said calmly.
“Worsening my ass! He is in quarantine!
How can me being here make him worse?”
As if on cue, the alarms on the
bio-monitors shrilled and Phlox hurried over to the controls. His expression
darkened, then grew even graver than it had been. In the quarantine room,
Malcolm Reed started to cough weakly, each breath a raspy fight for air,
his body shaking with seizures.
