SXSW, VH1 With the
release of his first studio album in six years looming, Tom Waits is preparing
to turn up in some unlikely places to promote it. A month before "Mule
Variations" hits stores on April 27 (courtesy of Epitaph Records), Waits
will play his first non-benefit concert in four years with a performance at
this month's South By South West music conference in Austin, Texas. The
journeyman troubadour will close the conference with a performance on March 20
at Austin's Paramount Theater, and will presumably
stick out like a sore thumb amid SXSW's fresh-faced
upstarts. For the show (which will preview some of the material from "Mule
Variations"), Waits will be joined by guitarist Smokey Hormel, bassist
Larry Taylor, and drummer Stephen Hodges. Before that, Waits will step before
the cameras next week in Los Angeles to shoot an installment
of VH1's "Storytellers" series that will air this summer. The
performance series features captures artists
performing in an intimate setting and telling the stories behind their best
known songs. Spokespeople for Waits also say that the singer/songwriter may be
hitting the road in May, but that nothing has been decided yet. January 7, 1999 Epitaph News Tom Waits
will be tentatively releasing his record, entitled 'Mule Variations,' in
late April. Produced by Tom and Kathleen Brennan, guest musicians on the
16-song record include John Hammond, Primus, Marc Ribot,
Charlie Musselwhite, Larry Taylor, Ralph Carney, Greg
Cohen, Stephen Hodges, Smokey Hormel and Joe Gore among others. Most of the
record was recorded in Northern California at Prarie
Sun Studios. On the film side of things, Tom has landed a role in a new film
called 'Mystery Men,' starring Hank Azaria, Ben
Stiller, and Janeane Garofalo,
which is currently filming. Tom plays a character called Dr Heller, and we hear
the movie is about 'misfit superheroes,' based on a comic book. July 23, 1998 Tom Waits Signs With Epitaph Musician
extraordinaire Tom Waits has signed a one-album deal with Epitaph and expects
to release new material in early 1999. "I'm making my first studio album
in five years for Brett Gurewitz at Epitaph
Records," Waits says. "It's a label run by and for artists and
musicians where it feels much more like a partnership than a plantation. I feel
like I am part of a unique enterprise that runs like a muscle car. Brett has
kept one foot in the street and makes certain that the artists all share in
their own success. We shook on the deal over coffee at a truck stop. I know
it's going to be an adventure, and as Warren Oates said, 'It feels good. I
think we'll take it all the way.' for newest news go to

According
to the danish newspaper
"politiken", Tom Waits and Robbert Wilson are collaborating on a new play (performed
in October 2002?). The play has the title "The White Town" and is
based on the story of the danish
architect Arne Jacobsen, designer of the "Bellevue teatret"
(build in the mid 1930's) where the play is going to be staged. "The White
Town" is based in the settlement "Bella Vista", a futuristic
residential area that include the small "Bellevue
Teatret". The part "Arne Jacobsen" is
going to be performed by a well known danish
actress, but the paper does not state any names.
The story still has no official confirmations, but the paper has a reputation
as being serious.

"Alice" and "Red Drum" will be released on April 9, 2002.
Unlike the long wait for the album "Black Rider", Tom Waits has only
waited a year to announce the release of 'Red Drum' and 'Alice' by Anti
Records. These albums were inspired by Tom Waits' work on 'Woyzek'
and 'Alice', both collaborations with Robert Wilson. These acoustic albums are
"startlingly different in landscape, sound, emotion and composition"
according to the label.
"Big Time" will be shown at the Rafael Film Center
in San Rafael, California the week beginning May 25th. On May 24th at 7:30pm,
Chris Blum, who directed the film, will be in attendance and will take
questions from the stage after the program. Some promotions Tom did with Chris
over the years including several for "Rain Dogs" will also be shown.

" Big Time", out of print for some time, may
be re-released. There are plans to release the film on DVD. No release date has
been set. I will tell you when there are news...
The new album "Wicked Grin" has been produced by Tom Waits and
includes many cover songs like 'Clap Hands', 'Get Behind the Mule', and 'Shore
Leave'. It also features 2 new songs written by Tom Waits. Tom sings on
"I've been changed" (a song which was performed during the concerts
in 2000 by Tom). Sound cool!
Tom Waits has (for the third time) teamed with acclaimed avant-garde theater director Robert Wilson for a new version of the 19th century psychological
drama Woyzeck. Written by playwright Georg Büchner, the original play
is based on the true story of a soldier who murdered his girlfriend in Leipzig,
Germany, in 1821.
Waits composed all the music and lyrics for the production, which premiered
Nov. 18 at the Betty Nansen Theatre in Copenhagen,
Denmark, with his wife, Kathleen Brennan.
Tom Waits Plans Three European Shows Tom Waits has scheduled a trio of European
dates for late May. The enigmatic performer, who is reportedly working on the
follow-up to his critically acclaimed 1999 Epitaph album "Mule
Variations," will perform at the TPSA Music and Film Festival in Warsaw,
Poland, on May 26, followed by two performances at Paris' Grand Rex theater on May 29 and 30. As Waits has toured rarely
throughout the last decade, fans hoping these dates may signal another leg of
last year's "Get Behind The Mule Tour" shouldn't
get their hopes up. Representatives for Waits insist the three European dates
are the only live performances the artist has planned.
Atlantic
Records is releasing two soundtracks to the 'Liberty Heights' film.
"Liberty Heights: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" includes
"Putting on the Dog" and "It's Over" from Tom Waits,
written and performed especially for the film. This album is to be released 4
January 2000.
Load down the sound sampels! Right here, right now! Putting on the dog and It's over
12 December 1999 Tom Waits and Robert Wilson to collaborate again
Robert Wilson has asked Tom Waits to help in his production of Georg Brüchner's drama 'Woyzeck'. This drama is a nightmarish fable, originating in
a true story about the soldier who kills his girlfriend in Leipzig in 1821. The
play will premier November 14, 2000 at the Betty Nansen Theater in Denmark as part
of Culture Bridge 2000 Celebration (this is a bridge connecting Denmark and
Sweden). This same drama has also been used in a serialist
opera 'Wozzeck' by Alban Berg.
Tom
Waits has been cast for the role of Dr. Heller in the upcoming film
"Mystery Men". This film, being directed by Kinka
Usher, is based on the Dark Horse comic of the same name. Other actors involved
are Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, William H. Macy, Paul Reubens, Janeane Garofalo, Geoffrey Rush, Greg Kinnear
and Pras. MFor more Infos go to http://www.imdb.com
