The Secret of the Chime Journals

Gordon F. Currie, former webmaster of RivenGuild and the official MYST III: Exile Hompage, said in Cyan Chat in March 2001, that there would exist some additional information about MYST III: Exile hidden on that official game site. Hints for finding these hidden pages could be derived from the journal entries with the chimes background sound. The journals can be reached via the FAQ page at the MYST III: Exile site. Click on the map lying in the pile of sand at the bottom of that page. So far, nobody found these hidden pages; at least nobody told us about it ;-)

The Hints

2001-03-11
Here is a copy of the chat log from Cyan Chat where Gordon gave his hints. The original log can be found at the website of lonelyto25.
I created an excerpt of that log containing Gordon's statements and related replies only.

April 2001
Susan Weyer from Presto mentioned additional material about Exile in the second part of the Under the Hood article at Myst3.com:

"Gordon and I have much more material to share with you, once you've all had your own time with Myst III: Exile."
Maybe she's also referring to the hidden information at Myst3.com?

2001-05-30
Dan Irish, producer for the Myst/Riven product line at UbiSoft, said in an interview with NetObjects about the www.Myst3.com website:

"We’ve also hidden a lot of details in our site which gives viewers a better understanding of the story and perspective for the game."

2001-06-01
In an interview with Jim Stephenson about the closing of the Rivenguild website, Gordon made again remarks about hidden information at Myst3.com:

"Lastly, with the Myst3.com site, early on we planned to unveil some backend story to the site and hide some material for fans to discover. The journals were written over a certain time frame to correspond with the villain in Exile and his change in state of mind. In particular his treatment of his beloved wife. I can't say much more than that at this time as it may tie to future storylines currently being evaluated."

The Journals

To solve the secret of the Chime Journals, the texts of the Chime Journals alone as well as the their graphical presentation could be relevant. However, it is more likely that one needs to consider both the texts and their particular looks. Thus, for the purpose of analysis, a page with the mere texts of the journals and a page with the images of the journal pages are provided.

In various places at the Myst3.com site, there are other journal entries. The journals with the page turning sound Gordon referred to in Cyan Chat, are reachable through special click spots similar to those for the Chime Journals. There is a list with direct links to the books containing these journal entries available. Rising compiled a convenient list of all the journal entry texts with links to the places where they originally were found. Although these journal entries probably do not contain clues for the secret area(s) on Myst3.com, they are included for reference (one never knows).

The Search

As mentioned above, the hidden information on Myst3.com is not found yet. At the MYSTcommunity Forum, there is a thread where ideas and theories about solving this puzzle are communicated. Everybody who wants to join is very welcome and any contribution is greatly appreciated. (An irregularly updated transcript of the thread is available at this site.)

I tried to analyse the Chime Journals by taking letters from the texts with three different methods:

The results are seperately presented for each journal or for each method.

A counting of all the journals' text elements is also available.

Inspired by an analysis of Journal Four done by M'lah Sihfay, I counted the appearances of words for each Chime Journal. The results are presented by color-coding the journals' texts.
