Matthias Köppl
From an early age, I participated in various sports: gymnastics, soccer, track and field and tennis. At
the age of ten I discovered a passion for field hockey. At first I played in junior teams of the
Rüsselsheimer RK sports club and my team and I won several Hessian youth championships and even
one German championship. With the representative team of Hesse I also won the Franz Schmitz Trophy
in the federal states' competition. After moving to Brunswick, Germany, I played for several years in the
Braunschweiger THC men's team in the First and Second Field Hockey Bundesliga.
In Brunswick, I also discovered my second main hobby – the Burschenschaft Germania, a traditional
student fraternity. As a member of this group – made up of students and alumni of the Carolo-
Wilhelmina Technical University – I came to know a special kind of team spirit. Just living with the active
members under one roof taught me a lot, and events like presentations, company visits or workshops
offered further training and preparation for my working life. Student fencing was, without a doubt, an
extreme experience, but it was one that I would not have missed for the world.
But my hobbies are not limited to the fraternity and field hockey. I devote a lot of my remaining free
time on other sports activities: I am a recreational and regular runner and biker, and I love playing
football or its little-known indoor version "futsal". In general, I am up for anything that keeps me on the
move. Besides all that, I find it relaxing to go to the cinema or play board games with my friends or
family. But what I like most of all is cooking, especially my favourite dish "Marillenknödel", a rich
Austrian pastry.
