Matthias Köppl
I grew up in Bingen, a small town in Rhine-Hesse. After four years at the local primary school, I attended
the
Stefan-George-Gymnasium. I took part in this grammar school's classical language program
choosing Latin as my first foreign language. I later expanded my linguistic repertoire with English,
French and Spanish. Nevertheless, I have always been particularly interested in mathematics and
physics, which I chose as two of my three main subjects in upper secondary school (the third being
social sciences with an emphasis on history).
Having passed the Abitur, and thus gaining entrance qualification for higher education, I served ten
months in the German army to fulfil my national service obligation. Afterwards, I enrolled in the industrial
engineering and management program at
Carolo-Wilhelmina Technical University in Brunswick,
Germany. After my undergraduate studies, I chose production management and marketing (business
administration) as well as production and system engineering (mechanical engineering) as the main
emphases in my graduate studies. The subject of my
project thesis was an analysis of the market for
solid oxide fuel cells; my
study thesis dealt with the EU Directive for energy-using products.
Because my first two academic papers had been solely aimed at serving the university's research
needs, I sought out a more practical topic with a direct link to industry for my final
Diplom thesis. After
reviewing the possibilities, I accepted an offer from
Bertrandt Ingenieurbüro GmbH Ingolstadt and spent
six months in Upper Bavaria. While there, I developed a communications strategy for the "Engineering
Services" department. University supervision was provided by the
Department of Business
Administration and Economics.
