Delicious Ugandan Food

Ugandan Food is very varied and also very healthy. The main dish is mostly matooke, which is made by steamed plantains. You should give it a try and cook it yourself! Additional you will find alot of vegetables like peas, beans or pumpkin. Other main dishes include sweet potatoe, cassava, millet bread or yams but also rice, normally served with beef or chicken stew, groundnut (peanut) sauce, also - but rarely - mushrooms.

As "side dish" you can choose for example nyama choma (different types of grilled meat available - but I prefer goat) or muchomo which is also grilled meat.

A must in Uganda is grilled Tilapia - a very nice tasting fish. A nice place for dishes with fish is Half London a cool area for dining, some good music and enjoying.

Also give chips and chaps a try (which are chips and a roll made by roasted minced meat)...but it's not such a "local food" like oluwombo and chapati which you should try at Ekitobeero near Fairway Hotel.

Tasty and healthy

But how could you be in paradise without trying sweet fruits? And if you are in Uganda you will find many different types of tasty, sweet and juicy fruits.

My favourite fruit is definitely jackfruit. Probably the most known fruit if it comes to Africa is the banana - but with the Jackfruit you have a delicious combination of a similar taste with a sweet and juicy fruit. Here in Vienna you will only find Jackfruit in tins (better leave it - not the real taste as it is kept in syrup) or in form of chips, which is worth a try as it is a nice (and fatless!) snack.

Some other tasty fruits are avocados, passion fruits, pineapples or mangos.

Therefore you can't miss to check one of the many marketplaces in Kampala or in the villages. Here you can choose the best fruits and you will find out how tropical fruits should really taste!

Check out the markets!

But also drinks are of importance in Uganda. You will realise that sodas are very important in Uganda - due to the fact that you should strictly avoid drinking water from the tap! Always look for sealed bottled water or sodas. For those of you who prefer hot drinks - you are in heaven. Not only that your eyes will enjoy to see fields of tea or trees full of coffee, but also your tongue will be happy to enjoy real fresh African coffee or tea. In case of having eaten a bit too fat or something wrong, try either masala tea or tea with ginger. You will see it works fast and at times better than pills and drops. But never forget that you are in a tropical country and if you have signs of sickness, better see a doctor too early instead of too late! Don't take chances!

But there are also other forms of "hot" drinks. A speciality in Uganda is definitely Uganda waragi. Waragi is a strong liquor - namely banana gin and is really "spicy". It's comparable to Austrian "Schnaps", so it won't make you blind :-). In villages they might offer you crude waragi - well you need to know if you wanna give it a try :-). In some African restaurants in Vienna you can even get waragi.

My favourite is something more sweet - namely V&A (Sherry) or Amarula (German version) which is actually a South African drink also available in some stores in Vienna. The taste is very creamy and sweet.

But of course especially in Kampala you will also find something for European, Indian or American taste. There are big fast food chaines where you can feed your hunger for pizza, pasta or subs. At the same time you can choose within a variety of small local joints where you can find tasty food at reasonable costs. Have a look at all the restaurants and bakeries of Kampala and you will find out - there is something for any taste!
