This publication describes in interviews and extensive annotations the works and artistic concepts of Jussi Kivi and Lauri Anttila. Both of them are very interesting artists which are known in germany only for a minority of specialists. Kivi’s art is based on innumerable hikes in the forests, which are located in the belt of the city of Helsinki. His work is reflecting upon the contact point between nature and culture. In the forest of the suburbs he seeks the romantic experience of nature, which is broken by the distant noise of the car traffic on the city ring.

Since the end of the 60s Anttila is dealing with the question of the strange »nature of nature«, which he investigates on many hikes and trips. He works on a complex atlas, in which the different answers to this question - formulated by art, science or religion - are united.

Both artists had strong impact on my own work. The publication gave me the possibility to better understand the influence of Anttila and Kivi on my own work.

Yrjo Haila is Professor for environmental policy at Helsinki University. He has organized several excursions to russian biological station for both artists and scientists. (in the context of the projects »Permafrost« and »Strangers in the Arctic«) He is well aquainted with Kivi's and Anttila's work and has an interesting view on it.

The titel »The Straight Line« refers to one main issue of the text; the so called straight line walks. Several individuals have been adopting that mode of pedestrian movement by various reasons; the text discusses such undertakings by Henry David Thoreau, Hillaire Belloc
(who walked from southern France to Rome on a straight line: »The Path to Rome«), Richard Long and Lauri Anttila, who is known for is »Long Walk« - a 11 km circle walk around the Pori Art Museum, while Richard Long was working on one of his stone circles in that particular museum.
