International Project YUN KHAN |
||
|
Yun Khan is the given name for this 30 year old BODEN Design known as Temptress 34'. She was originally built in Sydney and is now getting the refit she deserves. We have to thank Sylvester from Poland, Cathy from Canada, Marie and Ron from Australia and Heiko from Germany who helped us to make the Yun Khan Reassembling Project possible and therefore considering it as an international project.
She is a steel boat and was looking at the time we took her over more like a tank.
A container was rented where we could stow all gear that came with her.
The boat was almost fully stripped as some major hull repairs were necessary. Nearly the whole bottom of the hull was recently replaced with new 4mm steel plates.
Rotten parts like this vent hole had to be removed. Small work possible for every amateur boat builder which will pay back in the future.
just cut it out ...
and replace it with a new plate. The plate was welded in with an arc welding machine. But the task to change a big 4 mm floor steel plate seemed to me not as easy as the small plate. We discovered a floor part which was rotten because of having an inbuilt fridge above it for the last thirty years. I tried to get around it and had been pushing the job in front of me, still, it had to be done so I just jumped in even though I was shitting myself.
To cut the floor as accurately as possible I first made four holes in the old floor to pull up the new plate with ropes on temporare welded pieces of angle iron. In that way I could make an exact cut alongside the never hundred percent pre-cut plates, which is saving a lot of grinding edges for the final fitting.
Up till that stage it was relatively easy. Still, the big hole had a very scary look.
First I fitted and tacked the smaller vertical piece in ...
and then the actual plate. Two temporarily welded pieces of scrap metal held the plate in the back and in the front again two pieces of angle iron to pull the plate into place.
Now it looks almost ready to weld but it is not flush all over yet since the hull of the boat is not just a box. The plates are slightly bent or twisted to gain curves over several meters. In our case there was from one corner of the new piece to the diagonal opposite corner just a twist of about 3-4 mm necessary which didn't need to be done before fitting.
To pull the plate a little bit back out I also had to weld a temporary dog clamp on the outside.
