December 28, 2007 -  Bad news at the end of the year ...

Sean Penn and Robin Wright Penn Divorcing

Sean Penn and wife Robin Wright Penn are divorcing, their rep, Mara Buxbaum, confirms to PEOPLE exclusively.

No other details were immediately available. The couple, who've been married 11 years, have two children together, Hopper Jack, 14, and Dylan Frances, 16. Penn, 47, and Wright, 41, began dating in the early '90s and married in 1996. They also have starred together in several films, including 1998's Hurlyburly and 1997's She's So Lovely, directed by Nick Cassavetes.

"Marriage ain't easy, but it's great most of the time," Penn told Entertainment Weekly in 1997. "I love Robin. I've always loved her." In the same article, Cassavetes was asked about working with the couple. "The beginning and the end of every day is how Sean and Robin are getting along," he said. "If they have a bad morning, Sean's broken up about it."

Penn's most recent film, Into the Wild, which he directed, is drawing awards buzz, with four SAG Award nominations and two Golden Globe nods.

December 21, 2007 -  Sean Penn enters Oscar race

The nominations for the annual Screen Actors Guild awards were released yesterday and they could hardly have been more different to recent critics' award nominations, including the Golden Globes. There was no mention of the British film Atonement (which lead the GGs with seven nominations) or the Tim Burton musical Sweeney Todd (four GGs) while Sean Penn's Into the Wild received four nominations, proving that the actor-director is much admired by his peers.

The Screen Actors Guild awards can be an indicator of how the Academy Awards will go - because actors make up the largest voting bloc in the Academy. Last year, for instance, both Helen Mirren and Forest Whitaker won the big acting awards from the Guild and then again at the Oscars.

The SAGs ceremony takes place on Sunday January 27 – sandwiched between the Golden Globes a fortnight earlier and the Oscars four weeks later.

December 11, 2007 -  "Into the Wild" leads Critics' Choice nominations

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Sean Penn's adventure tale "Into the Wild" garnered the most Critics' Choice award nominations on Tuesday, including best picture, best actor for Emile Hirsch and best director for Penn.

The Critics Choice Awards, organized by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, have a strong track record when it comes to predicting Oscar winners. Their 2006 choices for best picture and director, "The Departed" and Martin Scorsese, went on to win Oscars, as did three of their four acting choices.

"Into the Wild," based on the true story of a suburban rebel who starved to death while seeking freedom in the Alaskan wilderness, received rave reviews. But it has under-performed at the box office, selling just $16 million worth of tickets since its September release.

December 11, 2007 -  Sean Penn endores Dennis Kucinich

Sean Penn issued a "nonendorsement endorsement" of Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich on Friday in a speech to nearly 400 San Francisco State University students, urging his audience not to fall into the trap of voting for someone only because they could win.

Kucinich, a congressman for Ohio who has run for president before, is fighting to stay out of last place in the polls. Most polls put his support in the low single digits, far behind front-runners Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton.

That shouldn't matter, Penn told students.  "I'm not going to tell you who to vote for," he said. "I'm going to talk about this guy. But my interest, and I hope yours, is in the Constitution of the United States."

Penn didn't appeal to at least one student, a man in a blue San Francisco State sweatshirt, who stood silently in front of the stage and raised a sign reading: "Stop supporting America's enemies," then another asking: "Hey Sean, have you seen a UFO, too?" an apparent reference to Kucinich's recent statement that he had spotted a UFO.

The lone protester attracted a few hisses but was ignored for a few minutes until a pair of Kucinich supporters tried to block his sign with signs of their own. A brief and mild scuffle ended with the three in a bear hug, prompting Penn to quip: "That's OK. This is San Francisco, and we allow gay unions."

When the protester resumed his silent protest, some in the crowd called for him to sit down and stop blocking their views. Penn waved them off.

"I think it's possible to pay attention to this and this at the same time," he said, pointing at the protester. "We are stereophonic thinkers."  (Read Sean Penn's Original Speech)

November 16, 2007 -  Sean Penn - The Eternal Rebel - Interview for "Film Ink"

The outspoken, uncompromising and often misunderstood SEAN PENN gets back behind the camera with the darkly beautiful INTO THE WILD. Here he talks about working with Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder on the film’s soundtrack, and also about the extraordinary lengths to which his leading actor Emile Hirsch went to in portraying Christopher McCandless, who threw away all his money and went feral in the wilderness.

October 25, 2007 -  INTO THE WILD - Big applause at Rome Film Festival

Emile Hirsch and director Sean Penn attended a Rome Film Festival screening Wednesday of Penn's adaptation of the best-selling book about Christopher McCandless — whose restless wanderings left him starved to death in Alaska at 24.

"Everybody wants to go on the adventure of a lifetime. Everybody wants to step outside their comfort zone if they get an opportunity to," the 22-year-old Hirsch told a news conference. Penn agreed — but "not to the point of recommending some kind of reckless self-endangerment, but certainly to the point of making your heart beat a little faster."

Penn, 47, kept his sunglasses on the entire time. "You have to forgive me, I drank too much of Rome's red wine last night," he said.

Into the Wild," which has already been released in the United States, had its European premiere at the RomeFilmFest, out of competition.

October 23, 2007 -  Sean Penn + Jon Krakauer on ICONOCLASTS

With the series Iconoclasts Sundance Channel approaches the interviewing process in a different way. The series pairs two celebrities together and follows them as they head out into a more neutral environment where they can interact with one another in a much more casual way.

When the new season starts up this Thursday (10/25), Sean Penn and Jon Krakauer get together to trek through Alaska, following the path of Chris McCandless.

Throughout the journey, Sean Penn discusses his interest in the story of McCandless and how he came to direct the film. He also briefly discusses the loss of his brother, the challenges of parenting and the reasons why he prefers filmmaking to acting. It airs on Thursday, October 25th at 10:00 PM on Sundance Channel.

PRESSCONFERENCE
(Click Into the Wild box - top left !)

Highlights from the pressconference:

Many people  have been telling Sean Penn that Into the Wild has a welcome sense of youthful joy and spirit:
"I accept this," he says. "I am happy about that. I am experiencing for the first time a movie that, in finishing it, I'm not forced to own anymore. In fact, it's everybody's movie. I always thought the wanderlust was universal here. So the people seem to be really embracing it as their own."

Why did he so connect to the true-life tale?
"In a word, freedom. The overwhelming story is one of pursuit-celebrated existence. Exalted existence. But it's really just that passage of rite. That is, to strip off all conditioning, be it frauds or one's own fraudulence. And all against a landscape that is relentlessly authentic." In other words, dropping out and roaming free, man. "It's beautiful and brutal and as real as it can be," he adds. "All of that was exciting to me."

Sean Penn to the photographers:
"Keep taking pictures for a second, because I'm giving you every expression that I have. Then you can stop taking pictures, because I can't think. It's the ugliest music in the world all day. OK? Just because I did everything I was going to do."

Sean Penn to the journalists:
"I want to destroy a myth by the way, because this is something that comes up. As actor and director, people say I have a particular touch with the actors. I always f***ing resented it when people said, 'How did you bring out the performance from this person or that person?' Doesn't happen. Directors don't get performances out of actors, actors give great performances to directors."

Emile Hirsch on working with Sean Penn:
This was Penn's passion project, a book he spent 10 years pursuing. And he made Hirsch get in shape, lose weight, live a monastic life and do all his own hiking, climbing and kayaking in the film. Working for Penn proved so arduous that Hirsch is only half-joking about getting a T-shirt that reads: "I survived Sean Penn."

First reviews:

  • Sean Penn's "Into the Wild" is a brave, strongly felt, beautifully realized film of Jon Krakauer's non-fiction
book - An "Easy Rider" for our times,

  • For best picture, the experts are leaning toward Sean Penn's Into the Wild ("very positive press response," says Howell)

  • The performances are almost beyond reproach – you forget you are watching actors, which is surely the highest compliment one can pay the cast in a film like this.

  • Penn isn't interested in his (McCandless) mistakes. Instead, he gives us a modern-day John Muir, a determined young man enthralled by nature's powerful beauty.

  • Penn doesn't really seek to make us agree with Chris and like him, or not; he simply puts Chris' story out there,

  • Penn's precise view of him is ambiguous. With its slow-mo scenic rhapsodies, the film does seem a bit less questioning of its protag's motives and wisdom than Krakauer's book. But both tome and pic tell a fascinating tale, with room for myriad personal interpretations.

  • Eric Gautier's astounding cinematography is visceral

September 2, 2007 -  Sean Penn meets Werner Herzog

The dominant aspect of this movie was a wanderlust that I felt," explained Sean Penn (center) on Sunday at the Telluride Film Festival, discussing his new film, "Into The Wild," with author Jon Krakauer (left) and filmmaker Werner Herzog (right). Conversation moderator Scott Foundas noted that it is this sense of wanderlust that bonds Penn's film with Herzog's "Encouters at the End of the World," an exploration of Antarctica. But, for Penn, there is even more to it, namely the inspiration he took from Herzog's work.

In making "Into The Wild," which stars Emile Hirsch as Chris McCandless (whose journey to remote Alaksa was documented in Krakauer's nonfiction book of the same name), Penn explained that he was particularly influenced by Herzog's history of total immersion when making his films. "We more and more are representing the story and not making it," Penn said of filmmaking today, praising such Herzog films as "Fitzcarroldo" and "Aguirre, The Wrath of God" and saying, "I tried to do that."

Herzog, Krakauer and Penn pondered the seemingly extreme, escapist move by McCandless and discussed the concept of risk-taking in their own work. While Herzog hesitated at the idea of encouraging such reckless behavior among young people, Krakauer noted, "Young men and women will be reckless," adding, "I think you can't tell young people not to take risks."

Later, asked about the travelogue imagery showcased in "Into The Wild," Penn quipped, "Looking at the footage in the edit room [I thought], 'Jesus, I am an American', because I keep getting told I'm not." The remark elicited hearty applause from the large crowd that had gathered in a town park for the free discussion.

Branded "an instant American classic" by writer Larry Gross in the Telluride Film Festival's notes on the new film, Sean Penn's "Into The Wild" has been a hot ticket at the festival, but respoding to critics of his film, Sean Penn said, "I'd rather that people feel anger than not feel anything from the movie."

August 26, 2007 -  INTO THE WILD debut in Fairbanks, Alaska

Sean Penn's latest film "Into the Wild" will have its world debut in Fairbanks, Alaska.Sean Penn's latest film Into the Wild will have its world debut in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Penn said debuting the movie locally first is a way of thanking all of the Alaskans who worked on the film while it was being filmed last summer near Fairbanks. The first screening will be shown at The Blue Loon in Fairbanks on September 3rd.

"Into the Wild" is Penn's version of Jon Krakauer's 1996 bestselling novel. Penn wrote the movie and directed the true story of a naive 24-year-old Virginia man, Christopher McCandless, who hitchhiked to Alaska in 1992 and lived off the land. He was found dead in an abandoned bus after 112 days in the wilderness.

The film will be released nationwide on September 21st.

August 7, 2007 -  On the Road with Sean Penn and Chavez

LA GRITA, Venezuela -

Aboard the presidential jet, a grinning Hugo Chavez put a hand on Sean Penn's shoulder, praised his acting and added: "And he's anti-Bush!" The Venezuelan president reveled in his role as host to the Hollywood star as they flew across the country Friday and traveled through the countryside in a military jeep with Chavez at the wheel, stopping to greet cheering supporters.

The Oscar-winning actor has previously condemned the Iraq war and called for President Bush to be impeached, but he revealed little about his thoughts on Venezuela, saying he came as a freelance journalist after reporting stints in Iraq and Iran - and was saving his conclusions for print.

"He's a courageous man," Chavez said as he introduced Penn to reporters and dignitaries during the flight from Caracas to western Venezuela. "He's very quiet, but he has a fire burning inside."

Penn is the latest in a series of U.S. celebrities and public figures to visit Chavez, including actor Danny Glover, singer Harry Belafonte and Cindy Sheehan, who became a peace activist after her soldier son was killed in Iraq.

Penn's star power was eclipsed by Chavez, who honked to flag-waving admirers along the road through a mountain valley and stopped to kiss children and clasp hands with screaming women. At the end of the trip, Chavez and Penn donned white lab coats and toured an agricultural research laboratory.

Some Chavez opponents have been critical of Penn's visit, saying he is being used for political purposes. While Chavez made a speech, however, Penn stood at a distance alongside the audience, occasionally jotting down notes. He spoke only when Chavez asked the actor to say a few words.

"I came here looking for a great country. I found a great country," Penn told the crowd.

"I'm also here as a journalist and so I owe it to that medium to wait until I've digested, fact-checked and finished my journey here" before saying more, Penn said. He thanked Chavez for the visit.

At one of Chavez's many roadside stops, Penn remarked: "I'm just here to take it in like everybody else."

Juni 28, 2007 -  Sean Penn to star in the new Oliver Stone Film 'Pinkville' ?

Back in November of 1969, news surfaced in the United States of a horrible massacre in the Quang Ngai province village of My Lai, Vietnam, in which American forces were said to have killed anywhere from 350 to 500 locals including women, children and the elderly. This now will be the basis of Oliver Stone’s fourth film about the Vietnam War, Pinkville. And the actor set to help him couldn’t be more tantalizing.
According to Thanhien News by way of Time-out, it will star Sean Penn, who previously made U-Turn with the director..

Sean Penn on HBO: Bush and Cronies Should Be Jailed for Iraq Lies

Sean Penn, fresh from his "metaphor off" with faux pundit Stephen Colbert, appeared on another news/comedy program Friday night, "Real Time" with Bill Maher on HBO.
There he railed against the Iraq war, climaxing with a charge l that George Tenet, Vice President Cheney, Condoleezza Rice and President Bush himself "should be in f---ing jail" for their alleged lies to the public that led to thousands of American losing their lives in that war.
About a half hour later he realized he had left someone off that list, saying he "forgot about Rumsfeld."

Another panelist, Gary Shandling, poked a bit of fun at Penn, joking several times about the actor's supposed vacation house "in Iran".

 April 23, 2007 -  "Meta-Free-Phor-All" - Sean Penn vs. Stephen Colbert

You don’t get to attack President Bush and his “blood stained underwear” without Stephen Colbert challenging you to a duel. And that’s exactly what happened when Stephen Colbert confronted Sean Penn about the candid remarks the actor made last week. The gentlemen worked out their differences during in “Meta-Free-Phor-All” fashion on Colbert’s show this week. This is pretty funny stuff, and made even funnier since it’s Sean enn - who knew he had a sense of humor?

Here Colbert goes up against Sean Penn in a game show format "Meta-Free-Phor-All, including a poet laureate and a particular George Bush's undergarment. The duel was moderated by former U.S. poet laureate Robert Pinsky. Penn trailed 1-0 going to the final round, as he kept ending every metaphor by quoting from his recent antiwar reference to President Bush's "soiled and bloodstained underwear." But the final challenge was to provide the metaphor for a picture of President Bush -- standing in bloodstained underwear. Colbert was stumped while Penn said something about going to war on false pretenses -- for which he received 10,000,000 points and an easy win. Colbert broke down in tears but thanked Penn for coming. Then he threatened to challenge George Clooney in a similar contest.
Fans and critics all say: Penn hasn't been this funny since Fast Times at Ridgemont High...

February 8, 2007 -  Sean Penn joins protesters outside court material

FORT LEWIS, Wash. - Sean Penn hunched alone over his coffee Monday in a Starbucks shop, a stone's throw from the DuPont overpass where supporters of Lt. Ehren Watada held their signs aloft and a much smaller number of foes counter-protested. The actor had been out there with the Iraq war protesters in the chilly fog, which dampened the air but not their spirits.

Watada was inside Fort Lewis, his first day in a military courtroom for a court martial that will decide his fate for refusing to go to Iraq and for talking publicly about his reasons.

Penn was about to leave for the airport and return to the San Francisco area, where he's filming a movie. He said he knows what the outcome of the trial will be. "He'll be convicted and go to jail," he said in a quiet voice. "I think he knows that."

Penn, famous for his work in films such as "Mystic River" and "Dead Man Walking," called Monday's rally great theater with all the elements: large banners praising Watada's courage, anti-war songs, speeches and larger than life-size puppets of President Bush and top administration officials.

At least 400 people converged on the Interstate 5 overpass and at nearby Iafrati Park, where most of the demonstrators gathered to listen to speeches from a makeshift stage. The size of the rally grew all day and protesters planned to stay until nightfall. Anti-Watada groups were there, too. They were far outnumbered but mingled easily.

Penn said he was impressed by the turnout. "But I'm not that surprised really when I see the 400,000 to 500,0000 people in Washington, D.C., last week (for the national anti-war rally.) So I think there is a wave beginning."

He said he came to the area because he's opposed the Iraq war since the beginning and because the Watada family invited him. Watada supporters included numerous Veterans for Peace chapters from Washington and Oregon and other anti-violence and anti-war groups.

January 27, 2007 -  Sean Penn speaks at Antiwar Rally in D.C.

Four leading Hollywood actors known for their political activism -- and run-ins with the press -- spoke one after the other near the close of the huge antiwar rally in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, held under bright blue skies. Media coverage has been sparse so far.

Susan Sarandon und Tim Robbins

Jane Fonda made the most dramatic statement, after noting that the press backstage had been asking her about the differences between her Vietnam era protests and today. She then announced that this was the first peace rally she had spoken at "in 34 years" -- due, she said, to "the lies that had been spread" about her anti-Vietnam activities for decades. She said, "I was afraid that the lies they spread about me...would be used to hurt this movement. But I have decided that silence is no longer an option."
