The German IYA SternenFest in Bonn

on the Münsterplatz on June 27, 2009: impressions from the afternoon part

Key players of the SternenFest ("Party of the Stars"), the central cultural public event of the International Year of Astronomy: Organizer and emcee Paul Hombach with Bonn's mayor Bärbel Dieckmann.

The brass section of the Beethoven-Orchester had the first musical part (with the reporter noting a certain resemblance between sections of Holst's "Jupiter" and some Star Trek themes over the years).

Occasionally the Sun could be shown to visitors of the SternenZelt & SternenFest.

The first of three Maus-Shows; the orange giant is actually one of the most popular childrens' TV characters in Germany - and a must-have in familiy-oriented space events ever since one Maus travelled to space on the Mir 92 mission.

Key players, continued: the deputy SPoC Gabriele Schönherr and the SPoC Michael Geffert as well as Ralph Burmester who is curating an astronomy history exhibition at the Deutsches Museum Bonn (opening Oct. 7) and Ludwig Krapf who in the municipal administration of Bonn deals with culture issues. The long paper lists all German IYA events during the 100 Hours of Astronomy, by the way.

Comedy time! The popular Springmaus improv theater performs (it wouldn't make sense to even try to explain what is going on here :-), featuring TV celebrity Bernhard Hoëcker - who also gave a stand-up act and served as a talk guest. Even some rain wouldn't disperse the crowd now.

The booth of mind and vision who were webcasting the event as part of the SternStundeOnline astronomy TV project.

Another German TV celeb, science popularizer (and amateur astronomer!) Ranga Yogeshwar - who was followed by another Mausshow.

The METROPOL Solisten were the final music act of the afternoon program - while in the final talk segment yours truly joined the stage with other amateur astronomers.

To the evening part of the SternenFest!

Back to some IYA events in April or the SternenZelt!
