"The Manics are Sissphyus endlessly pushing the rock up the mountain
only to see it topple back onto them - they are born to end - but
before they go they are going to drag a few fat bastards down with
them - they are shooting stars but they shine forever." (Patrick Jones) |
CONCENTRATION CAMPS
Prison or forced-labor camp created for military or political purposes. The first camps were build during the South African War by the British. During the Holocaust the Nazis in Germany set up camps to detain minorities or political 'enemies' like Jews, Communists, Gypsies etc. Most of them died of starvation or diseases. Later, in World War II, the main purpose of these camps, which were also called death camps, was to kill millions of people in the gas chambers. Concentration camps were also set up in China (Cultural Revolution, 1966-69), Cambodia (after Pol Pot came to power, 1976) and Bosnia (1992).

LEVI'S
Famous jeans brand named after the German Levi (Loeb) Strauss (1829-1902)The idea for these 'waist overalls' (old name for jeans) came from the Nevada tailor Jacob Davis. He wrote a letter to Strauss and explained how he made these new pants (metal rivets at the points of strain, pocket corners and at the base of the buttonfly) but that he didn't has the money to patent this process. Strauss decided to produce the overalls in his factories and in 1873 the patent was granted to both Strauss and Davis. The demand for the first jeans was overwhelming.
