OCEAN SPRAY

INDEX:

DISCOGRAPHY: Know Your Enemy
LYRICS: James Dean Bradfield and Nick Jones
MUSIC: James Dean Bradfield and Sean Moore
QUOTES: "With Ocean Spray I associate a sad experience. It is a lovesong for my mother – she died one and a half years ago. Sean plays the trumpet."
(James, Guitar 02/01)

"It was the first time I felt I could actually write a lyric and it wouldn't be crass. Some people dedicate a park bench or they plant a tree. I write a song. It's just about watching somebody die. When people are in hospital they're told to drink a lot of cranberry juice because of infections and my mum would say, Go and get us some Ocean Spray cranberry juice. There is an indelible strength in the human spirit if you can convince yourself that Ocean Spray will go towards keeping you alive. Besides the pure horror of it all there are certain things that do make you want to carry on."
(James, Q 03/01)

"James wrote half the lyrics to 'Ocean Spray' on this; you could tell it's a special song for him because it's about his mum who died of cancer. He was very bashful and very shy, he was just in the corner kinda playing it. And we all knew he had this brilliant tune and he was just mumbling away and I said "Y'know you've obviously written some words; y'know I'm not bothered." Y'know he had it was very touching and beautiful and Sean kinda did his tribute with a trumpet solo because Sean's a classically trained trumpeter when he was young. And I ended up writing half the lyrics towards the end as well so it was just a perfect; that's a perfect snapshot of how the album went really that we all chipped in with different things and different ideas and it was much more liberation in the record."
