On Mar. 24, 1989, the "Exxon Valdez" hit a reef near Valdez, Alaska and spilled approximately 10 million gallons of oil into Prince William Sound. Clean-up efforts ensued, but much wildlife was killed or endangered as a result of the environmental disaster. MADONNA (Madonna Louise Ciccione, 1958- ) American singer and actress Her eroticism, determination and provocative concert performances have brought her huge commercial success and made her a pop icon. In 1989 Madonna agreed to do three commercials for Pepsi and allowed Pepsi to sponsor her tour for $5 million. Madonna refused to be seen drinking the beverage and was seen holding the can only twice in the first commercial. Her "Like A Prayer" video struck much controversy by showing her kissing a black saint and dancing provocatively in front of burning crosses.
