2004.01.30 16:08 - Schneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Even more snow in Saskatoon January 2004

Even the Antarctic seemed balmy compared to Saskatchewan's Key Lake on Wednesday.
Environment Canada said Key Lake was the coldest place in the world, with temperatures that dipped to -52.3 C.
Jay Anderson couldn't find any place colder.
"I looked all through Siberia and Greenland and northern Europe and down in Antarctica, and there's just nobody that cold," the Environment Canada meteorologist said in an interview.
Vostok, the Russian base located in the middle of Antarctica, was significantly warmer than Key Lake, at -28 C.
"There was nobody that was even close," Anderson said.
Key Lake, a 570-kilometre flight north of Saskatoon, consists of a uranium mill and a residence for the workers. Only 175 employees were on-site Wednesday, braving the bitter cold.
The mill, run by Cameco Corp., services the world's largest uranium mine at MacArthur River. The ore is transported 80 km by truck for processing at Key Lake.
Anderson said that people in Key Lake should be used to frigid temperatures.
"They only beat the old record, which is two years old, by about two degrees," he said.
Mill manager Wyatt Buck agreed the temperatures weren't unusual.
"It's not uncommon for us to see -45 C to -50 C," he chuckled. "I suppose it's a bit like being in Siberia."
The indoor, heated mill typically runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and Buck said Wednesday was no exception.
"It's designed to handle this type of temperature."
Other Saskatchewan towns weren't much warmer than Key Lake: 11 other centres set low-temperature records for Jan. 28.
Saskatoon, Regina, Estevan, Weyburn, Rosetown, Elbow, Watrous, Nipawin, La Ronge, North Battleford and Meadow Lake all experienced record lows.
Meadow Lake was especially cold, with a -60.3 C wind chill, the coldest on the Prairies.
The extreme temperatures led to a record consumption of natural gas and electricity Tuesday.
SaskEnergy's pipeline service, TransGas, delivered a record 1.12 petajoules of natural gas to Saskatchewan homes, shattering the previous record set on Jan. 4, by eight per cent. One petajoule is equal to one million gigajoules, or roughly 30 million kilowatt-hours. To put that into perspective, the average home in Saskatchewan consumes about 130 gigajoules of natural gas each year.
The province also used 2,930 megawatts (MW) of electricity, breaking the record of 2,853 MW, also set Jan. 4.
"We're anticipating we're going to approach the record and surpass it," SaskPower spokesperson Larry Christie told Saskatchewan News Network Wednesday.
Weather problems affecting SaskPower's transmission system caused two brief outages in Saskatchewan on Wednesday.
In North Battleford, cold weather caused a line to fall out of its sleeve, drop to the ground and automatically shut off around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday, Christie said. This left 400 downtown customers and a few residential customers without power for nearly three hours.
Further west, cold weather caused problems at a substation in the Neilburg-Cutknife district, affecting 200 customers for two hours.
In Saskatoon, thermometers hit -44.9 C early Wednesday morning -- not including the wind chill, but the cold wasn't enough to keep Earl Hunt from completing his 45-minute, 5 1/2 km daily jog.
"I like to keep physically fit," he said, his eyebrows encrusted with frost. "I'm dressed warm and I get used to (the cold).
"A lot of people say I am crazy."
While it wasn't cold enough to stop Hunt, the weather did affect air travel and garbage pickup.
Bill Restall, CEO of the Saskatoon Airport Authority, said Wednesday morning's fog delayed some flights.
It was also too cold to use de-icing fluid, which has a "temperature threshold," so workers had to use mechanical means to de-ice the aircraft, he said.
"That takes longer," Restall said. "And once you get delayed first thing in the morning, it sort of compounds throughout the day."
Lanigan resident Elee Ubalde, who was taking a trip to the Philippines on Wednesday, was one of the travellers who experienced some delays.
Although her flight to Vancouver was scheduled for 10 a.m., she was still sitting at the Saskatoon airport at 8 p.m.
"I am so frustrated," she said.
City garbage trucks were also stationary. They didn't venture outside for a second straight day because the cold could cause mechanical parts to break.
Scheduled front-street garbage pickup will be backed up for a couple of days, but collection engineer Rob Court predicted they would catch up by the weekend.
Saskatoon should be warmer by then; Environment Canada predicts highs of -26 C Thursday and -20 Friday.
