61 Cyngi. Star in the Sirius Sector believed, by some late Galactic archeologists, to be the location of the origin of the human species.

Alpha (Also known as New Earth).  Second body in orbit about Alpha Centauri.  A water world with a single island of 250km by 65km constructed by the First Galactic Empire, under Kandar V, in order to provide a habitable environment for the last refugees of the radioactive Earth.   The only technologies developed by the Alphans were biotechnology and advanced weather control

Alpha Centauri. G-2 star in the Sirius Sector and closest stellar body to Sol.  Part of a binary system with Beta Centauri.  Late Galactic archeologists believed the location of the origin of the human species orbited this star.

Anacreon. Richest of the old Imperial prefects on the Periphery, 10,000 parsecs from Trantor and 8 parsecs from Terminus.   Fought a small war with the newly proclaimed Kingdom of Smyrno. The first step of the formation of the new Galactic Empire began with the instigation of a revolt on the planet and the formation of the Priesthood. Famous for the huge flying Nyakbird often hunted for sport. Anacreon consisted of 25 stellar systems with a population of 19,000,000,000. Famous for Locris wine.

Andromeda.  Nearest galaxy to our own.

Arcturus. Capital of the Sirius Sector. Falsely believed, by late Galactic archeologists, particularly Lameth, to be the location of the origin of the human species.

  • University of Arcturus. Where Bel Arvarden graduated as Senior Archeologist.

Askone. One of the planets of the Rim Worlds in the Galactic Periphery ruled by a Grand Master usually chosen from one of the Five Tribes.

Asperta.  Member of the Foundation.

Asteroid Belt.     Group of small asteroids orbiting Sol between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.

Aurora. Population 200,000,000.   Originally known as New Earth, the first world settled by Earth and the innermost world orbiting Tau Ceti.  Aurora was renamed for an ancient deity whose name meant "Dawn". - ruled by Chairman. Had a robot-human ratio of 50:1.   Considered superior, amongst the Spacer worlds, for its grape juice.  Had two small natural satellites, Tithonus and Tritons II.  After Aurora "died", many of its inhabitants eventually settled on Trantor mostly populating the Mycogen sector.

Places of interest.

  • Eos.  Administrative and robotic centre of Aurora where Hans Fastolfe and Gladia Solaria lived. Largest "city" on Aurora with a population of 20,000.  Contained the University of Eos and the Auroran Robotics Institute.

  • Auroran Robotics Institute.  Where one third of Auroran roboticists worked. Once headed by Keldon Amadiro.

Baleyworld. First world settled in the second wave of immigration by Earth. Named for it's founder Ben Baley. Ruled by a Planetary Council headed by a five-person Directory who are changed in a one-year staggered fashion. Population of 5m in 4924AD.  Later became known as Benbally World and then Comporellon.

  • Baleytown. Contains the government offices in Capitol Plaza including the Executive Mansion. Most buildings are underground.

Baronn. World in the Sirius Sector. Birthplace of Bel Arvarden.

Benbally World.   See Comporellon.

Beta Centauri Star that is part of a binary system with Alpha Centauri.  Known as the Companion by Alphans.

Betelgeuse.  Red giant star visible in the Earth constellation of Orion.

Bonde. Member of the Foundation.

Cil World on the standard route of travel between Kalgan and Tazenda.

Cinna

Companion.  See Beta Centauri.

Comporellon.  World in the Sirius Sector orbiting a star known, in ancient times, as Epsilon Eridani.   Formally known as Baleyworld and then Benbally World, Comporellon was the first world settled by humans in the second wave of expansion.   Named for its founder Ben Baley.   Became an Associated Power of the Foundation Federation.  Famous for exports of luxury wool and canned pineapples. The capital city is in the northern hemisphere.

Daribow. Planet on the Periphery. Formally a prefect before declaring itself a kingdom.

Euterpe. Spacer tourist world popular for it's rain-forests. Has one satellite, Gemstone (150miles in diameter)

Fomalhaut. World of the early Empire whose inhabitants speak in an extreme dialect.

Foundation. See Terminus.

Gaia Planet in the Sayshell Sector, 10 parsecs from Sayshell Planet.  Gaia is an ancient word for "Earth".  Has one small (100km) natural satellite.  Population; 1,000,000,000.  Engineered by the humaniform robot R. Daneel in order to resolve the conflict of the Zeroth Law.  In 498FE Gaia maneuvered Golan Trevize, Stor Gendibal and Harla Branno to the vicinity of Gaia in order that Trevize determine the future of the Galaxy.  A decision that Gaia couldn't make but believed that Trevize had a special aptitude that would enable him make the correct decision.  Although Gaia felt responsible for the Mule, they allowed the Second Foundation to correct the problem.  Gaia wanted Trevize to be convinced that he had made the correct decision in choosing Galaxia and so, through one of their members, Bliss, assisted Trevize in his search for Earth.

Gallia.  Gas giant in the Comporellon home system.

Getorin.  Pleasant resort world close to Trantor.

Glyptal IV. Planet in the Galactic Periphery.

H937 An asteroid forced into a circular orbit about Hyper Base in order to conduct a demonstration of the first hyperspatial jump.  Known as "It".

Hame.  See Trantor.

Haven II. Member of the Association of Independent Trading Worlds orbiting the star, Haven.  Described as "Rock world with cave cities". Was one of the biggest ship-building worlds of the Independent Trading Worlds.

  • Gleiar City. Location of a landing by Foundation tax collectors.

Helicon. In Arcturus Sector. Birthplace of Hari Seldon.   Circa 9600 GE the inhabitants, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, convinced themselves that they were the only inhabited globe in the Universe.

Indigenous Species.

  • Lamec. Beast of burden.

  • Greti.  Inspired the phrase "If you ride a greti, you find you can't get off; for then it will eat you"

Hesperos. One of the original Spacer Worlds where Vasilia Aliena awaited the death of her biological father, Hans Fastolfe.

Horleggor. Location of the Mule's first victory against the Foundation where twenty Foundation ships surrendered.

Horsehead Nebular.   Nebulous region of the Galaxy containing the Nebular Kingdoms including Nephelos, Lingane and Rhodia.

Hyper Base. Name given to the Twenty-Seventh Asteroidal Grouping in the Sol system were the Hyperatomic motor was developed by US Robots & Mechanical Men, Inc. Was closed and isolated from the rest of the Solar System for a period of two weeks after the loss of an NS robot.

Ifni Sector.  Location of a battle during the Stettinian War where a Foundation squadron was virtually wiped out by the Kalganian navy. The only vessel to escape was the Ebling Mis.

Iss. Member of the Independent Trading Worlds.

Jupiter Large gas giant in orbit about the star Sol.

Kalgan. Semi-tropical luxury world in the Santanni sector, approximately 50 parsecs from Terminus, once ruled by the Stannells.  Part of the First Galactic Empire and ruled by a viceroy.  As the Empire crumbled Kalgan's prosperity was maintained by a series of independent Princes. Became home to the Mule before his attack on the Foundation. After defeating the Foundation the Mule made Kalgan the seat of the Union of Worlds from where he ruled as First Citizen. After the Mule died, Kalgan was ruled by a series of First Citizens from Han Pritcher to Admiral Stettin. Stettin instigated the ill-fated Stettinian War against the Foundation which, although it left Stettin as ruler, had its navy dismantled and all of the  27 worlds remaining within the Union were made autonomous and allowed to vote for return to previous status, full independence or allowed to join the Foundation.

  • (c)1996 Stephen HickmanMule's Palace. Home of the Mule during his ten-year tenure as ruler.  Became a place of superstition after the Mule's death. Kalganians believed it to be cursed, that, when he died, the Mule directed that no-one enter the Palace until the Empire of the Galaxy is formed.

  • Central Theatre.  The largest in the Galaxy.

  • Flowered Path.  Fashion centre of Kalgan.

  • Kalgan Central.  Main spaceport.

Konom. Planet on the Periphery. Originally a prefect but later declared itself a Kingdom.

Korell. Located in the Whassallian Rift, Korell is the chief world of the Korellian Republic. The leader of Korell, known by the title of Commdor (meaning first citizen of the State), is chosen from the Argo family. Becomes a member of the Foundation although it was briefly in the Hands of Kalgan during the early stages of the Stettinian War.

Langano.

Lemul Cluster.  The location where Bel Riose saved two ships from a head-on collision.

Lingane World of the Nebular Kingdoms orbiting a star of spectral class G-2; 35 light years from Rhodia.  Ruled by an Autarch.  Last of the Kingdoms to be captured by Tyrann when it became an   Associated State. 

Livia. Home world of Humbal Yariff.

Locris. One of the Four Kingdoms. 20 parsecs from Terminus and 800 parsecs from Santanni. Briefly held by Imperial forces during the "war" between the Empire and the First Foundation. Birthplace of Han Pritcher.

Lucreza. Planet in the Periphery. Popularised by the saying "A howl you could hear way out to Lucreza."

Lyonesse.  Was forming a commercial treaty with the Foundation in 300FE when they were defeated by the Mule.

Lystena.  Outer World.

Mandress Member of the Inner Provinces where Harla Branno once served as Ambassador.

Mars.  Small planet in orbit about the star Sol.

Nephelos.  World in the Nebular Kingdoms orbiting a star of spectral class G-2 and home of the Rancher of Widemos and Biron Farrill.

Neptune.  Large (49,000km) in orbit about the star Sol. Discovered by Johann Galle in 1846AD

New Earth.  See Alpha.

Nexon.  Spacer world only 2 parsecs from Solaria.  Together with Solaria they formed the closest pair of inhabited worlds in Spacer times.

Nishaya.  Famous for its goat herding and high quality cheeses.  Part of the pre-Imperial Kingdom of Trantor.

Ophiuchus. Barbarous world once thought to have developed before interstellar travel.

Orsha II. Capital of the Normannic Sector of the old Empire. Twenty parsecs from Siwenna.

Planet V, (Gamma Andromeda). Scene of a catastrophic accident resulting in the deaths of several million people and laying waste to at least half the planet. The accident was caused by inferior repairs and replacement parts made to a nuclear power plant.

Pluema. Sub-prefect of Anacreon.

Pluto Small planet in orbit about the planet Sol.  Discovered by Claude Tombaugh in 1930AD.

Radole. One of the 27 Independent Trading Worlds on 300FE when it hosted the Assembly of Trading Worlds.  Known as a ribbon world because of its narrow, world-circling, inhabitable region.  Local newspaper is the Radole Tribune.

Red Corridor, The.  Location of sparsely settled worlds involved in a long, wrangling dispute circa 80 FE.

Rhampora.  World famous for its oysters.

Rhodia.  1098 th world settled by Man orbiting a star of spectral class F-8. Largest of the Trans-Nebular Kingdoms; 35 light years from Lingane.  Ruled by a Director.

  • Southwark.  Small town where Biron Farrill took on supplies before fleeing aboard the Remorseless.

Rigel. Developed a robotic culture which pacified the inhabitants such that they were easy prey for the War Lord, Moray.

Rossem.  World once used as a political prison for the Galactic Empire, which also held a small naval garrison and an observatory.  Rossem is a cold, barren and sparsely populated world.   Taken over by Tazenda after the Galactic Empire fell

  • Gentri. Village where the Tazendan governor lived.

Salinn. Member of the Foundation on the frontier between the Foundation and Kalganian territory.  Was the first world to be aware of the Mule's advance on the Foundation.

Salvan.  World famous for the gecko.

Santanni. 9,000 parsecs from Trantor and 800 parsecs from Locris. Attempted a break with the Empire in 12058 GE when a provisional party seized control of the government. Exporter of metal to Terminus.   Although captured by Kalgan in the early stages of the Stettinian War was instrumental in breaking the siege on the Foundation in 308FE by delivering food shipments.

Sarip World close to Anacreon.

Saturn.  Large gas giant in orbit about the star Sol.  Conspicuous by it's bright, large ring system.

  • Titan. Largest natural satellite. (diameter 5150km)   Has a storm season which lasts 80% of it's orbit.  Human base at Kornsk.

Sayshell Capital world of the 86 populated planetary systems of the Sayshell Union, fourth in orbit about it's star, 10,000 parsecs from Terminus.  When it was a member of the First Empire, its Viceroy launched an expedition to conquer Gaia but the expedition was broken and few ships returned.   One hundred years later, under its own leadership, Sayshell again attempted the conquest of Gaia with no better luck than the previous attempt.  Signed a declaration of neutrality and statement of friendship with the Mule in 305 FE.  Formed many myths and legends about the invulnerability of Gaia assigning many colourful appellations including "the little brother of the five sisters", "the pentagon's centre", "0 pentagon" and "unrequited love".

Sirius. Star in the Sirius Sector believed, by late Galactic archeologists, to be the location of the origin of the human species. In the 9th century of the Galactic Era a planet orbiting Sirius was one of the ten most populous planets in the Galaxy.

Siwenna. Home of Onum Barr. Once capital of the Normannic Sector of the old Empire. Rebelled against the Empire but was retaken in 200 FE by Bel Riose. Joined the First Foundation after the "war" between the Empire and the First Foundation.

Smitheus One of the fifty Spacer worlds.

Smushyk. Spacer world .

Smyrno. Planet on the Periphery. Fought a small war with Anacreon after proclaiming itself a kingdom. Located 50 parsecs from Terminus.
 

Sol G-0 star in the Sirius Sector about which all life developed on the planet Earth.   Has a planetary system of 10 bodies.

Solaria. The last of the Spacer world to be settled - and the first to die. Settled in 4422 AD from the neighbouring  world of Nexon; originally as summer homes for Nexonians. The outermost of three worlds with a diameter of 9,500 miles and 30,000,000 square miles of fertile land. Became independent in 4522 AD. Population 20,000. Had a robot/human ratio of approximately 10,000/1. Ruled by a Regent.  Was renowned amongst the other Spacer worlds for it's variety and excellence of robot models exporting specialised robots to all the other Spacer worlds. It also boasted a delicacy known as Pachinkas.  In circa 4920 AD, Solaria withdrew completely from the affairs of the Galaxy and over a period of tens of thousands of years evolved into a race of hermaphrodites and reduced its population to a mere 1200.  Solarians also evolved small transducer lobes, about the size of a hen's egg, which are activated by the flow of heat.  They could be used to control objects, at a distance, by thought.  A process known as mental transduction.

Star's End The location, cited by Hari Seldon, as the home of the Second Foundation.  Known to Second Foundationers as Section 33A2D17 because of the part of the Prime Radiant that describes its formation and purpose.  See Trantor

Steffani.

Synnax. At the edges of the Blue Drift. Birthplace of Gaal Dornick.

Tau Ceti.  Star of spectral class G-4 about which the planet Aurora orbits.  90% to mass of Sol which is 3.67 light years distance.

Tazenda.  Oligarchy in Pelot's Nebula believed, by the Mule, to be the home of the Second Foundation.  Ruled twenty seven worlds, including Rossem.  Was destroyed by the Mule in 302FE.

Terel. Independent trading world who had a minor victory against the Mule.

Terminus.

Tithonus.  Larger of two natural satellites in orbit about Aurora.

Tithonus II.  Smaller of two natural satellites in orbit about Aurora.

Terminus. The only planet of an isolated sun at the fringe of the Galactic spiral to which the Seldon Project was exiled in order to work upon the Encyclopedia Galactica. Located 50,000 parsecs from Trantor, between Anacreon (50 light years away) and Smyrno, it is described as a planet poor in resources, particularly mineral resources, and of negligible economic value.  A mild planet with a high water/land ratio. Terminus holds the distinction of being the furthest inhabited planet from the central black hole.  Terminus is an ancient word meaning "the end of the line".  Consists of 10,000 inhabited islands only one of which is large enough to be considered a continent, the one that contains Terminus City, the capitol. It remained unsettled for five centuries after its discovery until it became the birthplace of the Encyclopedia Foundation Number One or, as it became known, the First Foundation. Home of the Encyclopedia Galactica Publishing Co.

Trantor. Capitol world of the Galactic Empire. Home of the Emperor. Once known as the "Glory of the Galaxy".  Administrative centre of the Empire. Land area of 75,000,000 square miles and was entirely covered by metal with the exception of the Emperor's Palace. Circa 10000 GE domes were constructed covering the entire planet, again with the exception of the Palace. Population at its height was  45,000,000,000.  This figure was set by law. 

Trantor, at its height, consisted of over 800 sectors including Streeling , Imperial, Billibottom, Dahl, Wye, Mycogen, Anemoria, Millimaru, Mandanov, Ery.

Hari Seldon established the second of his two Foundations on Trantor, which he described, poetically, as Star's End.   With their mentallic abilities the Second Foundation was able to preserve themselves as Trantor and the First Galactic Empire crumbled about them.  After the fall of the Galactic Empire and the resulting de-metallisation of the surface, the local non-Second Foundation inhabitants re-christened the world Hame.

  • Luxor Hotel. Hotel stayed at by Gaal Dornick after he arrived on Trantor. Place where he first met Hari Seldon.

  • Emperor's Palace. Set in 100 square miles of natural soil and greenery.  Can be clearly seen from orbit.  The grounds were originally the family estate of the Morovian family in the early days of the Kingdom of Trantor.

  • Dome's Edge Hotel.  Just outside the Imperial Palace grounds.

  • Imperial Library.

  • University of Trantor. Originally covered with a monstrous, transparent, polarised dome.
     

Tyrann 1099th world settled by Man in 5224AD. Ruler of 50 worlds in the Nebular Kingdoms.  500 light years from Earth. A world with a barren landscape which is largely desert due to a planetary water dearth. Ruled by a Khan. Forbade scientific research and space navigation within the Nebular Kingdoms in order to maintain control of its subject worlds.

Uranus.  Large gas giant in orbit about the planet Sol.   Discovered by William Herschel in 1781AD.

Vega. Exporter of metal and tobacco to Terminus.

Venus.  Planet orbiting the star Sol.  Similar in size to the planet Earth but totally uninhabitable.

Vincetori.   World on the standard route of travel between Kalgan and Tazenda.

Wanda. Temporary Imperial headquarters during the battle between the Empire and the First Foundation.

Wencory.

Zeon. Planet in the Anacreonian kingdom.

Zoranel. Planet to which 50 members of the Second Foundation, including Pelleas Anthor, were exiled in 378FE.
