Imperial battlecruisers suffer heavy losses .... in a  initial battle over Al Barak , the Empire lost over 500 battlecruisers pitted against two new ULTRA Battleships of the PDI's ( later identified as the ARKOS'THAN and the SUPREMATUR ) while inflicting zero damage to the enemy .

The Empire could not afford to overlook these developments . During the early 28th century , the Empire started to recognize the superb military power of the Maquis under the control of the PDI's and paid special interest to the longetivity of its leaders , which it perceived as a most serious threat to the stability of the Galaxy . Individuals , was the reasoning , who are in control over whole sectors of the Galaxy and maybe immortal would be the end of the Imperial strictures .

During the less phlegmatic reign of Emperor Justinian VI , the Empire mounted its last ( and greatest ) military campaign under the lead of the legendary generals Bunapart and Rummel , both descendants of renowned military families .This was the only time in the history of the Empire that the Emperor ceded direct political control of all the Galactic Westside to Bunapart and ceded the function of Theater Command to Rummel .

All historical documents agree that the battles must have been of an epic , dramatic size . Many details of the technology of  the PDI's commanded are unexplained until today . More clues to that were found out later , but in the first 50 years the Empire was dumbfounded how a small sector could be more powerful that the whole Galaxy .

The Imperial forces suffered defeat after defeat as the resources of the PDI seemed unlimited . The monstrous battleships of the PDI's dwarfed the Imperial battlecruisers and were technologically centuries ahead . Around 2760 G.E. , a team of Imperial scientists developed the Omicron WaveFront Generator that rendered the shields of their enemies less impenetrable . The OWG worked on the principle of an interference effect through phase - neutralization . The first huge but still local victory for the Empire succeeded in destroying Tefra V , one of the PDI's centers of technological development . For centuries the Empire never realized the good luck they had because Tefra V was the scientific center of the PDI's advanced shield technology effort , and was well on the way to construct a Pentashield prototype that would have negated all 4 - D influences . A ship with a Pentashield would be immune to all  energy - based weapons ,  it would easily have been able to fly right through a sun without taking harm . Fortunately the whole institute was destroyed and that was the end of it .
