Tips
In the city of Zanzibar,
the best place to eat is at the boardwalk. During Rhamadan, it is
not allowed to eat until after sunset (about 8 pm), but it is well worth
the wait! Rows of vendors grill every type of seafood imaginable,
and the prices are excellent.
We did not go on the spice
tour, but we did tour the market in Stonetown and bought spices!
The market is a cultural experience in itself.
To get up to the beaches
at the north of the island, check with the hotels in Stonetown. The
trip takes about one hour, and the beaches in the north are much nicer
than those in the east or south. The bus drops tourists off at Nungwi.
About 45 minutes to the west on the shoreline, there is another camp called
Kwenda Rocks. Two-person huts called bandas directly on the sand
cost only $6 per person.
Snorkelling is available
daily for $25, and is well worth the day trip! Scuba diving is also
available.
Other than swimming in the
warm water, resting under a palm tree, and watching the sunset, every so
often a little boy will come along and offer you a pineapple or a coconut.
At night walking along the shore there are 5 million crabs that run across
the sand.
Unfortunately, there is one
serious warning: When we were at Kwenda Rocks, 2 women on the beach were
attacked and assaulted. Walking unaccompanied from a male is NOT
recommended, in day or night.
On our last day on Zanzibar,
we rented a moped to see the east end of the island. A Zanzibar driver´s
license is required and is checked every 20km by police at the side of
the road. The driver´s license is available upon renting the
moped. Unfortunately, the camera dropped out of our backpack while
on the moped, so you will just have to believe us that the north end was
much prettier than the south and east ends!
