My first tries with the KUbuntu 6.10 DVD in Alternate Mode were quite
futile, but when I got into the Live CD, installed i915resolution from
Multiverse repos, I could start X and KDM and install KUbuntu without a
fuz. Following my Partitions:

DELL Media Direct still works, even though, I installed GRUB to hda(0).
One can even still push the Media Direct Button at the front, but it
also appears as "Windows XP Embedded" in GRUB.

When KUbuntu
was installed, it booted into 1024x768. To achieve 1440x900, install
915resolution from Multiverse Repository. Also add "video" (without the
"") to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist. Reboot or restart X and
enjoy your 1440x900. 3D Acceleration works flawlessly, at least Bery
runs with 40 - 70 fps.
A note hibernation-wise:
Hibernation semi-works... Hibernation works, but it takes at least as much time as normal booting. In combination with session saving or "Restore windows after logon" it will be the same and wont have a negative impact because of no long uptimes...
Standby (Suspend-to-RAM) does not work. It suspends, but does not come back on correctly, but instead it boots normaly.
